Maybe you can tell us - what are the workable big ideas to fix it since then?

Let's elect democrats!

Reagan cut the top tax rates by more than half

and the deficit exploded.
quote:Nope. Our deficit in 2007 was... $161 billion. Obama's smallest defict was $442 billion. That was after 4 years of >$1Trillion deficits.
Bush 2 passed a massive tax cut and the deficit exploded. The annual deficit didn’t start going back down until the tail end of Obama.

So your contention the President isn't the leader of this Republican party?

That's why it's so fascinating.
Because you really believe that.

He is, he's just the most divisive Party leader in my lifetime.
And he doesn't really lead the Party. He throws tantrums when anybody in the Party doesn't kiss his arse.
That's not the same thing.

Americans will never tolerate meaningful reforms to Social Security or Medicare, and the symbiotic relationship between Congress, the Pentagon, and the military-industrial complex virtually guarantees that serious defense cuts are dead on arrival.
DOGE was/is great and needs to be emphasized. But our deficit problem will not be solved by DOGE. Got to reform social security and medicare and/or slash military.
That is the only way at thia point.
Which exposes about 99% of the bullshite we argue over on this board for what it is: divide-and-conquer tactics deliberately introduced and employed by a tiny elite class to keep us distracted, fighting among ourselves, and blaming our neighbors, who are struggling just as much as we are. Meanwhile, the people actually pulling the strings are busy accumulating generational wealth by mortgaging the futures of our children.
We've been conditioned to fight over the scraps while the people with an actual seat at the table walk away with the whole chicken dinner.
In short, we're fricked.
Might as well ride this thing until the wheels fall off and put the whole fiat-currency money-printer experiment to its ultimate test. Maybe future generations will learn something from the wreckage.
To quote Jim Morrison, "I'm just trying to have my kicks before the whole shithouse goes up in flames. Alright!"

Care to share where the increases are coming from?
“Defense” is probably the big one. Revenue is up. I know that Trump wanted to increase the military budget by half a trillion dollars. Probably $100 billion is just due to Ukraine and Iran.

It's way more like math than a manufactured narrative.
When in the past 20 years:
Vehicle prices have tripled
House prices have tripled
Mortgage rates have doubled
Fuel has doubled
Health insurance has tripled
Food prices have doubled
School tuition prices have tripled
The only prices flat are electronics like tvs and computers.
The affordability crisis will cost R control of congress in three weeks.

Tax revenue is up almost 4% over last year and much more over the year before. The growing deficit is entirely due to increased spending primarily due to higher interest on the debt service.
Tax revenue should go up year over year every single year. If it doesn’t, you have a retracting economy.
Every study of the deficit from 2000-2026 will identify the overwhelming driver of US debt as:
1. Bush tax cuts.
2. Trump tax cuts
3. One time spending in response to the Great Recession
4. One time spending in response to Covid
Republicans tax cuts and bipartisan stimulus packages are why we have a debt problem today.

Where would Kamala have it at
Posted on 10/17/26 at 9:20 am to ned nederlander
Correct
Last time government had a balanced budget was Clinton.
W's 'compassionate conservatism' was just deficit spending which exploded as you described and has only increased after covid and trump tax cuts. Now politicians don't have the political will to reduce it.
This will end in a debt crisis at some point. Its inevitable. Going the way of Rome.
