TX Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick says he’ll push for special session if THC ban, bail changes fail

Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick said he will move to force an overtime session of the Legislature if lawmakers fail to ban THC or tighten Texas’ bail laws — two of his top priorities — before the current session ends in early June.
The power to order lawmakers back to Austin for a special session is reserved for Gov. Greg Abbott, who also gets to set the agenda for such overtime rounds. But in his role presiding over the Texas Senate, Patrick can block any bill from passing, giving him leverage to compel special sessions by killing must-pass legislation.
Patrick did exactly that in 2017, thwarting passage of a “sunset” bill that would have extended the life of several state agencies, including the Texas Medical Board, after the House declined to take up measures curbing property tax rates and requiring transgender people to use public restrooms based on “biological sex” rather than their gender identities.
In an interview, Patrick affirmed that he would go a similar route this session if the House declines to get on board with his priority bill to clamp down on the state’s exploding hemp market by banning products that contain tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC.
quote:
Patrick and Senate lawmakers are taking aim at the roughly 8,300 Texas retailers that sell a range of hemp products — from gummies to beverages to flower buds — under a 2019 state law that authorized the sale of consumable hemp. Patrick and Sen. Charles Perry, the Lubbock Republican who carried the 2019 law, say the hemp industry has exploited a loophole in a bill that was intended to boost agriculture by allowing non-consumable products with small amounts of delta-9 THC.
While hemp products are not allowed to contain more than a 0.3% concentration of delta-9 THC — anything higher is classified as marijuana — Patrick and Perry contend that the industry has endangered public health by putting products on the shelf with dangerously high levels of THC well beyond the 0.3% threshold.
Perry’s proposal this session, known as Senate Bill 3, would effectively shutter the hemp industry by making it illegal to possess or manufacture products containing THC outside the state’s limited medical marijuana program.

I understand the need to clamp down on the bail process, as way too many already violent criminals have been let out free too easily awaiting trial only to commit another crime.
But anyone know why the hell Dan Patrick has such a hard on for THC and “legal” weed?

Probably getting paid by some lobby group that wants to get infrastructure setup to corner the market at a later date.

In the state of Texas, a liquor store cannot be owned by a publicly listed company, hence no liquor store at Sam’s or Costco.
The number of special interest laws that are on the books everywhere would stun the average non-attentive citizen.

I doubt even the majority of his supporters are for banning THC at this point. Read the room, boomer.

No. But, he might be looking at his neighbor.
Trust me Texans, have a very solid and finite set of strict rules and regulations before you go legalizing weed. I don't smoke but I also don't have a problem with weed, but I voted against "medical" pot in Oklahoma all those years back because there was no reasonable framework in place.
Now, we're overrun with illegal Chinese grows to the point where only the high rollers with multiple partners can own and operate any kind of legitimate and legal operation. And the State won't do shite about Chini in here because the State makes too much damn money off of him. The State lets Chini operate unabated and observes until the operation is worth multiple millions, and they watch when the black escalades pull up to take the cash away and figure out the routine. Only then do they sweep in when the most cash is on hand and make their "bust" and confiscate all that money.
That's exactly what's happening here. Look up the biggest illegal weed busts in Oklahoma in the last 6 or 7 years and you won't find a shitload of them, but you'll see that they were all multi-million-dollar busts and it was always some Chinis going down. At this point I don't think there's anything we can do about it either because all the right palms are being greased. And Oklahoma now has recurring budget surpluses and it's not a coincidence. The illegal weed businesses are contributing a ton of money to the state in their own way, but ultimately the CCP is still making way more off of us.
Don't just legalize weed without a plan in place or you're going to have lawmakers who don't understand the industry trying to catch up with illegal growing operations that are already light-years ahead.

most of the shops in Texas are owned by veterans
The farms aren't even in Texas to any significance so banning the point of sell will have nothing to do with the farms
Patrick is doing this for political reasons that have been previously mentioned and also it's something he's doing to dangle in front of the overtly religious right.. which after one of the stronger abortion bans and banning a state income tax three separate times ,, banning trans is sports etc he needs something to tell them is a moral threat he will do something about
The builders have him soft on employing illegals

After the no casinos, not being able to get liquor at Walmart pisses me off the most. It's bull.

That's what the Florida amendment was, to legalize but seriously limit competition.

Dan Patrick has just lost the senior demographic . Following the opioid made up crisis to make pain relief impossible to obtain, the go to solution for seniors has been gummy bears permissible under state law. I would venture that 80 % of folks older than 75 actively use that product.
Opioids was never a good solution. Causes constipation and seniors hate constipation
The concentration limit of .3 % is kinda flexible. Why not just take 2 gummies.
this could be the Pharma Companies trying to reclaim the market

The bum Dan Patrick needs to be thrown out.
He can go back to selling booze in a bar and then declare bankruptcy. Just like the hypocritical bast*** did before.

Pharma and alcohol are being hurt by THC.
Those two industries give a ton of money to polititions.
