I'm surprised there are any units in NYC that are UNDER $1M.

New York City is not just Manhattan, it includes very residential areas in Queens, the Bronx, Brooklyn and especially Staten Island.

As per Zillow, there are 8,579 UNITS (townhomes, condos-- not single family homes) under $1 million being listed for sale in the City of New York right now. No telling how many more (much more than that, for sure) are NOT being listed for sale:

Are the people in Brooklyn subject to these taxes also?

Brooklyn, Queens, The Bronx, and Staten Island are ALL part of New York City.

This Marxist screwball will succeed in driving out every productive person in NYC with the means to leave.

Those who don’t yet possess the means to leave - good luck on keeping them motivated and productive simply for the glorious good of the utopian masses.

Well over 100 years later and it’s remarkable that people still fall for this con job of Marxism being “the answer”.

Good luck NYC - you’re desperately going to need it.

This tax is stupid, but I get why they have the lower threshhold for co-ops. Those are typically cheaper than regular apartments.

This is exactly what I would expect to hear from a libertarian.

not sure if he really won the election

the dysfunction is a benefit not a bug. They want people to get frustrated and sell and leave the city. Then foreigners and foreign entities can then buy everything up

I know that condos and co-ops weren't initially listed in the tax. Good luck with your assumptions; would hate for your AVI to be wrong...again.

I doubt there are outside of some really bad ones in the Bronx.

New York will be a Muslim colony in less than two decades at this rate. Everyone will leave at a loss.

Just give him 5 or so years and nobody will have to worry about paying this tax.

How can they impose these taxes without having voted for it

They DID vote for it.

Call Mamdani what you will, but he did not hide his governing ideology from the voters. This is no bait and switch.

Voting for the mayor is not the same as a referendum voted on for additional taxes imposed.

The surcharge applies to 1, 2, 3 family homes valued at over $5mill.
So if you own apts and rent them out, you will be taxed? Am I reading that right?

The surcharge applies to condo's and co-ops valued over $1mill.
So does it matter if you use it as a second home or not? If you are renting these condos or co-ops out whether short or long term, will you be surcharged?

Initially I thought this was just for 2nd homes that you occassionally stayed out.
It sounds like this applies to owners that are renting them out as well.
If so, then everybody's rent is going up.
