You say Rs would be stupid to do it bc that’s what Ds want yet ignoring the fact the Ds can easily do i

It wasn't ignored. The DEMs have not sincerely tried to remove the legislative filibuster for the same reasons we're discussing it being bad for the GOP

They did have a FAFO scenario with judicial appointments, and learned a lesson. Now they have a 6-3 USSC against them.

quote:

Do you actually think Schumer or his eventual replacement will have more or less restraint than his predecessors?

I don't think they will be markedly dumber, which is what it would require.

Again, this is a MAD scenario. Our Constitutional infrastructure was not built around the concept of the Leviathan that fedgov has become (that was created/permitted via judicial rulings, not Constitutional amendment). To use a metaphor, we are a huge ship that cannot turn on a dime. Removing the filibuster will create the scenario where each party will be jerking the wheel the opposite direction every 6-8 years. That would capsize the ship (and the world).

I'll also say this as a more direct point. The DEMs can organize a unified front a lot better than the GOP. They will have an incredible advantage in a system without the filibuster when they are in power. It will be similar to culture, where there are swings back and forth but the net is always a move left.

and since Bidens election every county went more Republican

Again, near worst case scenario for the DEMs. The move to GOP was expected

And still, the GOP couldn't really muster a national majority. To think that the DEMs won't win another national election is idiotic.

This is something I don't understand... if there isn't debate ongoing, then how are they filibustering?
if thune had balls he would keep the Senate in session and call a vote and let them filibuster until they get tired. See if they can outlast fedgov employees not getting paid

He will never get the votes and it's a stupid idea.

Short sighted and foolish.

Exactly.

Keep the filibuster but make them do the physical work.

I'd much rather see this than "the nuclear option"... especially considering the dems are polling awful on this.

To think that the DEMs won't win another national election is idiotic.“(Quote SFP).

Not if the Republicans codify Laws which guarantee clean elections. And end gerrymandered Districts. Their power will be relegated to local urban districts and even then with them being dependent on Federal subsidies, very impotent. Watch Mamdani for the future.

I think Trump will force the Republicans to drop it and get to work. It’s now or never.

So you feel the Democrats when back in power will show the same restraint and not go with the nuclear option? I like that it exists; however, it literally can be killed at any moment. If it is so revered than put it into law that it can’t be quickly tossed to the side.

I think just change the rules to a simple majority or lower filibuster threshold to 55 votes for appropriations bills only to prevent long drawn out shutdowns. Keep it in place for all other bills

Sure it would.

But this is Trump, because this is populism.

Don't worry about the implications of abandoning whatever principle or mechanism you're getting ready to dismantle or ignore tomorrow. You have something you want done TODAY. And that's all you can think about.

It's a very immature culture.

It certainly is.

AND, I have heard that all my life. Every time the Republicans win, in fact.

Dumb idea. This is how we get socialized medicine with 50+1% of the vote.

The filibuster was preventing loads of horrible crap from passing from 2021-2023 until the house flipped.

You cannot make a law on this subject because it would require the house to pass a law involving the Senate and you'd also have the president have to sign a law involving the Senate which would violate the constitution

Trump loyalist will now be for this but Trump is caving and giving the Dems the biggest win they could hope for.

I knew he would do this. He's so motivated by popularity and his popularity is at low point, still not that low compared to Biden or even Obama at this point, but that's what motivates Trump. He needs to be liked.

He'll push for this and probably get it. What it will do is set up the Dems for radical moves that the GOP can't stop in the future.

The Dems are smiling. They knew the key to their winning this would be in getting Trump to demand what the Dems want. We'll see if the GOP are just lackeys or able to stand up on their own and reject what would be a horrible move.

Don't give the Dems one inch until they open the GOV.

I'm not even sure Trump has the support to do this. So all this hand wringing is for nothing

To be honest I would create a very simple law in the house for a balanced budget requirement

I would then submit it to the Senate and have them vote for the law for a balance budget requirement starting in January 2026

Then when they go to filibuster that bill I would override the filibuster pass the budget amendment for a balance budget have Trump sign it

Then let them use the stuff to overrule it
