But there i another way.... Junior / community college.
Junior college is a great place to get associates or go on to get your bachelor's degree. My daughter is about to graduate from a 4 year institution after going to a junior college.
At the same time, my company (power) partners with that junior college to bring in new 'distribution operators'. I have a young friend, who didn't know what to do in life. I passed this info to him. He applied, was accepted into the program, did well and is now a junior operator in training. In 5 years, he will make six figures. He is 20 years old.

I understand thinking they will do this stupidity, but my guess is this is more focused on "DEI" degrees. Women's studies. Racial studies. Gender studies. Etc...
I think they just have to advertise with a larger umbrella than what reality will end up being.
Just a guess though.

This will absolutely make those degrees more affordable. They will lose 75% of their applicants if they realize they actually have to pay for it.

Or, it will free up much needed classroom, facility and prof salary space to encourage more STEM, business and other useful degrees at universities not well positioned to compete with better systems. Bring in competitive professors taking the place of African Studies or Fundamentals of Greek Mythology. Then, reduce a 4 year degree to 3, eliminating the bullshite need for 20+ hours of humanities or extra-curriculars like Jogging and Badminton and focus completely on core curriculum.
You know, revamp this shitshow and watch it thrive.

Just classify them as elective degrees and then bar all elective degrees from the federal student loan programs

Guys, I agree that getting fed loan money out of the equation would be the best way to lower costs, I just don't think doing that for specific degrees will have the upstream impact on other degree costs. Not funding your gender studies degree won't make a university incentivised to charge me less to be an engineer.
Now if you remove ALL the loan money over a defined period, I have no doubt universities would have to adjust.

The mix I liked is a form of forced double major. Centenary required a liberal arts degree plus a major in a specific subject. IE, if you wanted to be a doctor you satisfied the biology requirements and then you had to satisfy the liberal arts requirements. So, I took subjects for the liberal arts like History of Ancient Religion, Geology and Great Women in Literature. The religion class was fascinating. Geology was boring. The Lit class taught me that women cannot write.

It really is, but it comes down to the parents. The power of "No." should rule. Tell them if they choose the overpriced state school route that they will have to foot their own bill. It is a waste by and large for many degrees.
