Guys, I agree that getting fed loan money out of the equation would be the best way to lower costs,
Who said anything about lowering costs? This is about preventing people from going into serious long term debt for a degree that will never generate enough income to justify the cost. No one needs a 100k in debt for a degree that generates 25k in income? It’s a recipe for large scale loan defaults.

I understand thinking they will do this stupidity, but my guess is this is more focused on "DEI" degrees. Women's studies. Racial studies. Gender studies. Etc...
I can totally understand how people who are not educated cannot figure out what is actually being taught. I can also understand how uneducated people can get the false impression that a college education is the memorization of trivial facts. That is what idiots assume is going on. Why would anyone want to spend four years memorizing facts about race or gender?
But that is not what is being taught.
These race and gender studies programs teach critical research and writing. The premise is that there is something to discover about a topic, and a way to explain that through research and writing. The actual topic of the project is much less important than the method.
When you were in high school you likely had an English teacher who assigned a writing project covering any topic you wanted to write about. You could write about how to change a tire or how to attract and shoot ducks. The topic was not the assignment. The teacher wasn't testing your knowledge of changing tires. The assignment was how to use the English language to construct effective sentences and paragraphs to express an idea. The topic did not matter.
All of what you pejoratively describe as "DEI majors" teach basically the same thing. How to research something in society to discover new insights and how to effectively write about your research. That is the skill. The topic is not what is being taught. It is a method of research and analysis that is being taught.
By all means, de-fund any program that teaches critical analysis. That way we can have idiots as citizens. Idiots are easier to manipulate.

Isn't this doing what you just recommended, fewer government backed loans, targeting the degrees least likely to be paid off?

There are alot of useful degrees that don’t pay well either. We going to discourage people from getting zoology and forestry degrees? What about any of the education degrees? We just not going to have teachers anymore?
Seems the better a compromise might be putting a cap on student loans for some degrees instead of removing them entirely. It's in our interest to have a more educated public.

My 6th grade math class with geometry and algebra was more difficult than most kids are taught thru HS now days.

Can we just make all the degrees more affordable, please?
That’s what will happen when the taxpayer stops subsidizing the degrees

I get what you're saying but it's almost impossible to have a full-time job and a 25K income today. Even without stepping foot on a college campus.

What about grants? Can we do away with that 60 year old socialist policy, too?
Grants to push degrees desperately in need (engineering) may be worth it from a societal standpoint.

What can one do with this outside of academia? Not arguing you're right. You are. But the utility, and the amount invested, is what i would question.

Somehow women's, queer, and African American studies have just "discovered" that Western Culture needs to be completely dismantled.
I'm fine halting "discovery" in those fields for now.

If a business isn't selling a product they usually have sales to clear inventory.
You just suggested these businesses will raise prices to clear inventory people aren't buying.

Guys, I agree that getting fed loan money out of the equation would be the best way to lower costs, I just don't think doing that for specific degrees will have the upstream impact on other degree costs. Not funding your gender studies degree won't make a university incentivised to charge me less to be an engineer.
Now if you remove ALL the loan money over a defined period, I have no doubt universities would have to adjust.
I should have read the other posts; didn't mean to pile on.
I still think this will have that effect, but it will take time. Fewer students mean fewer faculty, staff, services and facilities to be paid for, provided and maintained.
I don't know of anything that's going to reduce tuition in the immediate.

bullshite. Trade schools are desperate for workers. Merchant mariners are in short supply. Roofers, plumbers, electricians, etc. you’re just lazy

Or the opposite will happen. If universities lose enrollment because these degrees aren't backed by government guaranteed loans then they might need to raise tuition across the board.
Well you couldn't be more wrong. Recent data is already showing that the reduction in federal loan money has started a trend of lowering degree costs.

maxine waters looking like a fool questioning bankers on student loan debt defaults. it is bankers who should be doing this. they can weigh the risk.
