A real respiratory therapist knows this without needing a study.

Yep, that idiot was quoting a research paper from an RC Journal, thinking it could work., but didn’t quite read the entire thing
I’m sure he googled it.

No way in hell that concept would work. It just shows you how much the average person, who doesn’t work in the medical field, doesn’t know jack shite about how any of this stuff works..

All of this, my friend’s wife is a nurse and she said is all hearsay... Unless you’re in the thick of it, you don’t know what the hell is going on..

The CDC estimates that 38 million in the US have had "the flu" this year, so far. Of those, 23,000 have died from it (although usually it's from the pneumonia that sets it). The chance of dying from the flu, then, is 1 in 1652. With the Chinese Virus, in the US, at this moment, it's 1 in 80.

Disparity in amount of testing between the two make this all but meaningless

The worst part of any crisis or emergency is the people who wallow in the gloom and doom and constantly try to highlight the most negative in every situation. It's a perverse enjoyment that I'll never get

The entire country has been locked down for the first time in the history of the country over the virus, how much worse could it possibly be?

I’m a big LSU fan that lives over here in Fairhope, AL, and I’ve always come to this board to read up on LSU football.

FWIW - My fiancé is an ER nurse at a hospital here in Baldwin county (I don’t want to be specific due to fear of word getting out). She also suffers from asthma. Since Tuesday of this past week, they’ve gotten a few patients (young, middle aged, and older) who have come in sick with pneumonia like symptoms. Some with no known underlying conditions. They ran x-rays on each of their lungs, and she told me their lungs were absolutely mauled by infection. Not even close to regular pneumonia on anything else they’ve ever seen. Tylenol wasn’t even reducing their fever. They’ve tested these patients, have yet to get the results back, but both she and staff there feel confident they are going to test positive. Very simply put, my fiancée is extremely scared right now being she has asthma and is on the frontline coming into contact with these patients. To make matters even worse, she’s telling me the hospital has ran out of facemasks and she’s having to reuse hers. Because of how bad she’s telling me it is, I’m also extremely concerned and worried for her.

Also, FWIW - I work for a law firm, also here in Baldwin county. Our head attorney forwarded everyone in our firm this email yesterday:

This is from Patrick Wiater head of ortho/trauma at Beaumont RO, largest hospital in Michigan.

“Hi everyone. Hope all is well.
I implore you to take this covid 19 seriously. It is real. Society is teeming with it. The numbers you see in media are the tip of the iceberg.
The ICU in the hospital is full of young adults on ventilators fighting for their lives. A medical assistant I work with is covid 19 positive on a vent. She is otherwise healthy person in her twenties. We are seeing mostly young people coming into the hospital with their lungs destroyed by this virus. The media made it sound like the biggest risk was elderly. Probably true but in Michigan it's hitting young adults hard.
Sequester you and your families away from everyone. Don't leave your house. Don't have any social interactions with anyone.
Keep your parents isolated. Incubation can be up to 14 days. Anyone who has not been isolated for 14 days is a risk to you.
It is estimated that 150 million in us will have it over next 10-14 days. I believe it. Southeast Michigan is festering with it now.
Hopefully this comes across as alarmist. This virus is horrible.
Stay safe. PJW”

The Fiance story I can believe since it has already shown people with pre-existing conditions like Asthma are at greater risk of infection.

The Lawyer email...good lord. They are making this sound like the walking dead.

The better part of a million people require hospitalization for flu every year, but a few thousand extra are going to crash our system. What's gonna crash the system is doing retarded things like closing schools down when children have nearly zero chance to get sick, the only effect being that you take out a sizable percentage of your medical staff whoo have small children and now have to stay home, especially nurses

I had a fever for two days. Low low fever. Never once topped 100. Wife only slightly worse than I. Don't panic.

Read this on NOLA.com. Terrifying. I wish I could unread it. All the more reason to fast track approvals of all meds and therapies that have promise.

Sounds like bullshite. The hospitals in New Orleans where there are hundreds of cases dont have all ventilators in use yet.

No one has to fast track anything. Doctors throughout New Orleans are already using the Chloroquine Azithromycin combo.

I don't work in those facilities treating this. But, peers do and that is what they believe. It still amounts to anecdotal at this point but everything is so until a blinded study is conducted.
