China supplies approximately 87% of U.S. antibiotic API imports and 80–90% of global API production.
How did this happen?

And strategic subsidization.
The Chinese government wants the world to depend on them, so they massively subsidize key industries to ensure that competitors cannot match their prices. Instead of holding them accountable for this power-pursuing market manipulation, we opted for the short run profits this manipulation generated and made them a full member of the WTO

I think I have heard this for diabetic medication, too.

American politicians allowed the country’s safety to be compromised by lobbying for their bank accounts

Someone needs to get Gov Landry on the phone. Antibiotic factory in Monroe would be good for the state.

We used to do this too then you had a guy named Reagan and now the Chinese build 200 ships for every one we build
There’s absolutely no way the us can compete globally especially starting over from scratch and why would someone with money start a business when they could put their money into the fake stock market that goes up to match inflation. This is how empires die btw

… welcome to like ten years ago. Nice of you to finally pull your head out of your arse and notice?
As if this wasn't plastered everywhere for 2 years of covid. Also, Trump already started on this well before this little group of cub scouts decided to pretend like it had an original thought.

I get all my antibiotics from Progresso, Mexico. and maintain a 2 year supply, and it's cheap. Essentially what your insurance co-pay would be. No doc visit required. Use Cleveland clinic web site type info sources to managed dosages and application

It's frightening, because even the U.S. imports finished antibiotic medications from India, which is the leading supplier of final-form doses, Indian drugmakers still largely purchase their raw active pharmaceutical ingredients and starter chemical reagents from Chinese factories.
The USA has ZERO active pharmaceutical ingredient factories left. It's been 22 years since the last fermentation plant for penicillin operated here in the States.

How did any government officials think that was a good idea?

Imagine that. A society that has over a 5000 year history has mad another very young society dependent upon it for not only antibiotics but the viruses, too!!

Their bank accounts = their personal bank accounts

Conservatives chose cheap goods and the illusion of the free market over the security and independence of their own country.

Bigger issue, big pharma doesn’t fund cures, only lifelong treatments.
TLDR - antibiotics work too well, so big pharma sold them off to smaller companies with no capital. No research any more in this space which is why we see all the issues with resistant strains not being addressed.
No money in a cure
