Shanghai crude just settled at a record 900.7 yuan a barrel. WTI: $104.52.

What matters? The gap was $5 in 2024. It was $18 in March. It is $30 today.

China has lost the free and heavily discounted oil from Venezuela and Iran and is paying record premiums for alternatives.

Data: Bloomberg, Shanghai International Energy Exchange.

The war is about China. People always laugh at me for saying that…but it is a fact. Venezuela and immediately after Iran? Of course it’s about China.

How do we stop China buying Iranian oil after the conflict unless we take over Iran like we did Venezuela? Isn't it more likely a weakened Iran allows China more influence once the dust settles?

Seems like China should join the US and finish of the Iran. That would shake the world up big time if the US and China joined forces.

What’s the strategy to keep Iran from ever selling to China again?

I believe China also has the largest reserve in the world. So yeah they're paying more now, but they have oil to work with.

Been saying this on here for a while. It’s a fundamental shift in power as a result of energy.

The challenge is China doesn’t have to worry about mid terms and elections. They can just plow forward on whatever their long term strategy dictates.

Politically they can outlast us and use our own media to their advantage to influence decisions that benefit them.

They can also pretend their economy is stronger than it is, until it collapses like a ghost city.

Good question. I don’t know. Doesn’t change the fact that the war is about China.

I don’t know. I do know China is hurting more from this “war” than we are. I also know Iran immediately following Venezuela isn’t nothing. Trump underestimated Iran. That was an error on his part. However, this war is about China.

Thanks for confirming that the nuclear weapons justification was a total lie.

So we should correct our trade imbalance by buying up every drop of oil we can at $104 then sell the excess to them for $134, use that profit to buy more oil at $104, etc.

No one know for sure how much but they can weather the storm better in the short term. Trump seem to be in a rock and hard place politicly with mid terms coming up and the middle east heating up the economy still sucks and high gas prices will make it work. Student loans are also starting back up so that will create more monetary pain

Hate to burst your bubble, but the chart isn't comparing apples to apples.

Pricing and Delivery Structure for Shanghai is CIF Basis: Prices reflect the arrival cost at the destination port, absorbing freight fluctuations. Unlike FOB (Free On Board) benchmarks like WTI or Brent, Shanghai futures factor in tanker and shipping dynamics. Spikes in global shipping rates directly influence the relative strength of the INE contract.
Those tankers all run on diesel.

So, what's really happening is that China is finally paying market price plus the added shipping and insurance.

Won't Iran...if the right circumstances happen at the end of this...be able to sell it's oil at market rates to anyone?

Wasn't it selling to China at greatly reduced prices because it had to?
