A conservative government exists to protect its citizens individual freedom, to form as small a federal government as possible, to limit taxes as much as possible, to maintain fiscal discipline through a balanced budget, to ensure the rule of law, to promote the national defense.

The republican party hasn't been conservative since Coolidge. Voters can be conservative. Politicians have to have money and therefore will never be conservative... because that money wants access to where the real money is made.

That's nonsensical. If you want to say that the GOP (at the national level) are just progressives driving the speed limit, ok. There are actual conservatives at state levels. Not enough, but they exist.

However, the question is a false dilemma. I get that people abandoned the Republican party because they didn’t uphold conservative values as much as the base wanted. However, the base then did the stupidest thing possible. They abandoned conservative values altogether in favor of a populist MAGA agenda.
Now the base will support anything. Today’s Republican voter sounds like I remember Southern Jimmy Carter era Democrats sounding in the 70s.
So the one thing I can say for sure is that the base is less conservative under a MAGA dominated party than it was under a GOP dominated party.
