Former President Barack Obama’s presidential library is hocking pricey merch shaped like the unsightly Chicago tower — as the project’s architects revealed the former commander-in-chief himself was behind the “Death Star” design that’s been widely mocked since construction began.

Ungainly lapel pins that “capture the silhouette” of the Obama Presidential Center are going for $30 in the online store.

“The pin represents the intersection of bold design and global leadership,” the website reads, noting the proceeds go to the Obama Foundation “to inspire, empower and connect people to change their world.”

quote:

Each pin is “handcrafted from unfired paper clay,” and is 1.6 inches tall by 1 inch wide — about as oversized as the center itself, which lords 225 feet over Chicago’s Jackson Park in a monolith of concrete and granite.

The $850 million center is slated to open in June after 10 years of development — and criticism of its domineering design — but its online store recently went live in the build-up to the grand opening.

“How can we make Clinton’s mobile home on stilts look like world class architecture?”

I can just picture Obama showing Bill and Hillary the plans and both of them snickering and saying “yeah, go with that.”

What actually is accomplished with a presidential library?

I get the commemorative aspect of it. And the building needs to be a representation of the man himself.

But is there any other function of a library of any president?
Can they protect secret documents?

Inform this uninformed poster.

Yeah. That's some pretty horrible architecture. I've seen parking garages that are more aesthetic

Sort of reminiscent of the spiral minaret. Things that make you go “Hmmmmm…”

If you asked me to intentionally design an ugly building, I'd have never come up with something that bad.

I think Obama's may be different, but all of the previous presidential libraries are overseen by the National Archives (officially the National Archives and Records Administration). Each one typically has a museum that gives information about that particular president and has items associated with his time in office. The Carter library has/had a display of the formal china that was used when the Carters hosted state dinners. The Reagan library has one of the older Boeing 707s that served as Air Force One during his administration.

In addition, the libraries hold a large portion of the records created by the administration during the time that president was in office (this is where the National Archives oversight comes in to play). Classified documents are most likely held somewhere else, but executive orders, state dinner menus, unclassified documents from presidential briefings, copies of speeches, etc. are all held at the library. This allows researchers or authors to go to a single location and have access to everything that is publicly available about that president's time in office. It also makes searches easier than if everything was kept in the main NARA facility in DC.

I think I read somewhere that the Obama library will be different in that there won't be hard copy of anything on site, but that things will be available in digital format. By the time that Obama took office so much was done electronically (email, Word documents, Excel files, etc.) it was easier to digitize the things that weren't already in electronic format than to print out the things that are.
