The collapse of Britain's National Health Service, the crown jewel of socialized healthcare

Great Britain's National Health Service, which is meant to provide “free” universal healthcare, is collapsing under the strain of long wait times, hidden data, and excess deaths.

Long held up as the crown jewel of “socialized healthcare,” the world’s largest government-run system is unraveling.

The crisis has led to a surge in excess deaths that has outlasted the coronavirus pandemic, with ambulance and emergency room delays linked to hundreds of deaths each week, leaked internal data suggest. Hospitals already near capacity last fall could not keep pace as the winter flu season took hold.

Seems to be a universal issue to hide the real problems of government ran anything.

And then magnify that with the US size difference. There is simply no way it would work. Not saying what we have is great by any means, but I can't imagine govt subsidized health care for all being a good thing here.

Of course it will. You can't mandate the government provide a product/service like healthcare and not ultimately expect lines and low quality.

Let’s see if any other countries go to our type of system

We’re more likely to go to theirs

Same as the education argument when in fact there is no correlation between money spent and outcomes when looking at urban schools.

“Crown jewel” my arse.

That has been a disaster for a long time but they have been denying reality and feeling superior to the US over it.

I worked in health care planning at the VA for over a decade as a Geographer. You can't compare our system to the European countries that offer universal healthcare for a multitude of reasons but the biggest reasons are our population, amount of immigration both legal and illegal and most importantly our size and rurality as compared to our European counterparts. If we tried to implement universal healthcare you'd be asking rural and highly rural communities to pay into a system they do not have access to.

I have a dear friend who is an NHS nurse in England. She's relayed stories to me of ambulances waiting 10-12 deep to get into the emergency rooms and patients dying due to staffing shortages. There's literally not enough providers to cover the floors. Low moral and low pay is often a topic as well. Kinda sucks when your government job doesn't pay enough to keep the heat on in your government (counsel) housing.

Britain used to provide all kinds of benefits. Death, birth, birthday...

The NHS is a relic from those days, it too will have an end

No worries for the UK rich. They get private healthcare while they continue to promote the NHS for everyone else..

No one’s making policy based on areas no one lives in

Poor (uninsured), unhealthy people in the US are driving up cost for everyone. So the poor and unhealthy are getting government controlled healthcare.

There will be a secondary market for those that can afford better healthcare. Just like the UK, Canada and France.
