Actually, no. With a population of over a billion people, China needs to maintain a high GDP. Why? Because it has to keep its population employed. Think about the numbers if China suddenly facing 8-10% unemployment. That is a huge number of mouths to feed. So no, they can’t withstand decades of tariffs.

China would be ripe for a revolution. The vast majority of that country lives in extreme poverty. Mass shortages of food wood lead to mass insurgencies into business centers and areas of wealth/resources. Would be ugly.

Oh come on.

You can make legitimate arguments against the President’s strategy, but this is asinine.

The fact that this only has two downvotes at this time proves this board is retarded.

Cuba, Venezuela, North Korea and the Soviet Union all thought the same thing and it ended badly for them.

They found out the hard way that the market is the market and there's no manipulating it and propping it up.

What do you expect?

We've had this discussion before - I agree if this is a hard-and-fast kind of protectionism, but I genuinely think that this is more of a threat for negotiating purposes than anything else.

When in history has China ever cared about its people starving?

Go on.

When in history has China been a global economic power and its problems been subject to worldwide knowledge?

Though you have a salient point re: Sino disregard for life, do you not think that circumstances have changed?

Meanwhile, in Beijing...

Xi's wife just brought him a pack of wet wipes and a clean pair of underwear.

When they become a global power and a big player on the world market.

China has a lot to lose.

China is 100% dependent on our consumer market.
The US imported 478.8 billion from china in 2016. China’s GDP in 2016 was 11.2 trillion US Dollars.

Now that’s certainly not nothing. But come on, that’s like 4% of their economy. And that’s the entire US market, not just our final consumption markets. I’m glad trump’s actually trying to address a few serious issues, but acting like China isn’t an economic power in their own right is extremely wrong.

When posters on other boards talk about the retardation on the poli board this is exactly what they are talking about

And the ones with money would see their investments evaporate. Those ghost cities would become even more worthless than they are when the real estate market in China completely bottomed out.

Not only are you 100% correct about that ... but China does not have the grain or bean or rice reserves to feed it's people for a sustained amount of time nor does it possess the ability to do so at its current standard within its own farm production capability combined with any empathetic neighbors or friends that might rush to their aid. I'm talking mainly Brazil bit to include some of the asian nation states they've been bullying around for the past decade.

Could they make due for a couple of years? Sure, because Russia, Mexico and some others would jump in for the profits ... but in the long run it would hurt them big time.

That's not going to happen.

China's government would rather start a shooting war with us to incite nationalistic fervor than to allow their citizenry to revolt and try a coup of any sort.

Plus, based upon what I've read about their military, their military is not hamstrung or hindered in the least by any sort of Posse Comitatus Act.
