If this country gave a damn about mental health, GOP republicans would of supported better health care back 20 years ago. But no, the majority of US citizens DO NOT HAVE access to quality mental health in this country. So yeah, if you try to explain away tragedies like this with "mental illness" you're an a-hole.

People with mental illness ARE FAR MORE LIKELY TO BE VICTIMS THAN THE ACTUAL perpetrator

Oversimplified depictions of persons suffering from mental illness as directly causing targeted violence are unfounded and demeaning to those who suffer from mental disease.
These people are no more hazardous than the rest of the population. I almost lost a close friend in high school to suicide because of MDD and bullying. His parents told him to either suck it up or go find jesus. Yeah, that really helped! Those meds, some people on this board say that are "overprescribed" help HIM FUNCTION. A hateful person full of rage /=/ mental health.

People on this board need to look within themselves every time they hurl an insult and hatred against the "other".

What if no matter what we do there will always be bad people willing to shoot innocent people?

There is much irony to this considering the two paragraphs that preceded it

Are you implying that people that commit mass shootings are not mentally ill?

Most of these shooters were actually taking psychiatric medication whenever they went on their shooting spree.

What, exactly, are you attacking?

Are you really trying to say that it’s illegitimate to claim these shooters are mentally ill?

Damn, we would have 20 more kids in the world if they would have used the power of prayer to stop the bullets!

No, the only logical move is to punish everyone that hasn't committed gun violence. That will surely solve it.

I mean some of these people have mental problems. This particular guy just committed suicide by cop and took children with him.

Mentally stable people don’t run into a school and take out children.

Of course it’s republicans’ fault when a gender queer lunatic kills a bunch of kids

No offense to the group in question, but there is no way this is correct. People of sound mind don’t randomly start shooting people.

Also, of course most mentally troubled people do not act out violently. No one is seriously arguing that that is the case.

The problem with your argument is where you assume all those with mental health problems are going to acknowledge they have a problem and seek treatment. I understand what you're saying, access to mental health treatment should be expanded but let's not kid ourselves into thinking that everyone with a problem is going to say "yep, you're right. I do have a problem, let me get some help". That's just simply not going to happen.

So you're tell me that when individuals commit mass shootings/killings of other, innocent, human beings, that they are NOT mentally ill? Just to be clear

One of the Texas shootings several years ago was a guy that escaped a mental hospital.

I see the pictures of these babies that were just murdered and you can’t convince me someone of a sound mind could go and end their lives like that.
