We are barreling headfirst over a cliff and it seems like no one cares about advocating for solutions like gradually raising the retirement age, etc. Instead, we are likely to either face a fiscal catastrophe or raise taxes to a massive extent to keep the lights on, thus significantly reducing our economy's ability to grow. It's sad to see a majority of the country, and many in the populist wing of the Republican base (Republicans in Name Only), don't seem to care.

This is why Matt Gaetz's fake fiscal conservativism rings hollow and I can't take him seriously. He is an acolyte of a presidential candidate in Trump who vehemently opposes doing a single thing to stop this from happening, and actually attacks more conservative candidates on the basis that they want to address this issue.

There are some like GumboBot on here who claim we can simply print money to inflate our way out of this. I disagree. Actually that concept doesn't make one fricking bit of sense at all when you factor in Cost of Living adjustments. It's also an irredeemably anti-conservative point of view.

At any rate, this is the reality of the situation, and every sane conservative should be in agreement on the issue. Gaetz's circus on this is just a shiny object to distract from the reality the country faces. He isn't a real conservative, he's just trying to make himself famous.

both would be fully funded for the next 50 years if they just shift that ukraine money to the SS account to pay for it

Honestly, just give me the money I’ve given to social security now. No chance I ever see it down the road.

Close all overseas military bases and furlough 60% of personnel. The problem solves itself.

Pretty sure it already is insolvent and it will continue because the govt can’t take away what it’s already hooked people on.

I don’t think it’s that people don’t care it’s just not our jobs and why should the peasants care when we’re not the ones burning thru OUR money?

You could have had a solid thread if you left the last two paragraphs out ruining your main argument.

Once again you are blaming one rep for problems when it’s tens of thousands of government employees and decades of frick ups.

How about the government keep their hands off retirement plans. This includes 401K's they keep eyeing.

This is fabricated bullshite but I guess it's not shocking there are other retards on this site that would upvote this fake statement.

Since the Ukraine War started, the U.S. has appropriated about $113B to it.

We spent just under $2 trillion annually on SS and Medicare in 2022, and CBO expects that to double in 10 years.

But check out that shiny object over there! Look at what Gaetz is doing!

I believe what is more likely is that social security taxes will start being collected on "unearned income" such as capital gains, lease and rental income, interest and dividends just like they are on "earned income", i.e., salaries and wages.

What do you think the point of representative government is? Vote the shitstains out who don't want to do anything about it and let our kids' generation get completely fricked.

I don't like him primarily because he's a Chad and a grifter. But you are right, I also don't like him because he preaches the virtues of fiscal conservatism when he is a slave to the one GOP candidate who mirrors Bernie Sanders on the issue.

Will it matter if the debt is $45T in the 2030s?

Do you think I want them to go after 401ks? I am practically resigned to them raiding mine one day to fund those who didn't save.

That's an entirely different discussion from gradually raising the retirement age.

It’s just money. Can’t we just print more?

The Democrats want to remove the cap. I believe it is around 160K now.

They also want a net worth limit. So, for instance, if you have a net worth of $5 million or more at retirement you would not be able to draw SS.
