Yea I can't imagine doing that, seems like it could get you in serious trouble not to mention putting your fellow men and women in danger not to mention imperiling your mission.
But some people crack and make bad decisions, I suppose.
I agree that it seems doubtful that it would be sleeper agents. Possibly a religious angle, a disgruntled Muslim. I remember the Fort Hood massacre by the psycho Muslim doctor and when that Muslim soldier rolled grenades into the latrine, killing his fellow soldiers.

They probably thought it would be localized

WSJ and Al Jazeera are cheering from the same side of the bleachers. There is a reason why conservatives have abandoned the WSJ.
Also, you do not provide a link?

Unfortunately not everyone joins the military for the right reasons. Some join because they can’t make a living doing anything else but once in, they can’t adjust to military life.
Those are the ones who will fight the system and don’t care if they hurt others as long as they get their way.
Then there are those who milk the system, doing the bare minimum to get to their ETS so they can apply for their 100% disability checks

All the more reason to send them back to the stone age.

If a ship got combat damages enough to dock. . .it would be waaaaaaay more than a month
The Yorktown was damaged so badly at the Battle of Coral Sea that the Japs thought it was sunk. The yard at Pearl Harbor turned it around in 72 hours and it headed to Midway where it fought and was sunk.
I’m sure today’s ships are way more complicated and would take a lot longer, plus we are not the men of 1942, but in an emergency they could get a ship repaired quickly.
Obviously this case is not one of battle damage, but the reason is what. poster mentioned above - that there were too many witnesses for a free society to keep it secret.

The USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN-78) is currently in Split, Croatia, for scheduled maintenance and repairs following a non-combat fire in its laundry room on March 12, 2026. This incident injured three sailors and damaged approximately 100 sleeping berths, displacing roughly 600 crew members.
Someone microwaving aluminum is going to be counted toward the casualties.

You are correct, but I always chuckle, its a classic parody of Captain Kirk talking to Scottie in the engine room.
Nimitz "How long to repair the Yorktown"
Engineers "Approximately 3 months"
Nimitz "Good Ill give you three days".

Many people are saying the one-month "laundry room fire" repair is a cover story.

Yet somehow the thousands of sailors on board have managed to keep the secret. Not even one of the twerker sailors leaking it.
Amazing.

Casualties are minor?

You don’t even understand what you are quoting. Uninhabitable, not because they are totally destroyed. Uninhabitable because they are targets of Irans missile attacks.
