Right. Huge free market guy but I also recognize it’s role in completely destroying modern American architecture.

Form over function, cheapest materials possible, quickest construction time possible. Add it all together and you get the desolate landscapes found in the majority of our nation’s smaller cities.

That's got nothing to do with the free market, it's a values issue. Market economies have produced the finest architecture in the world, behind cathedrals and early government buildings. While the latter two were built by market assets, it's fair to say that market pressures weren't as applicable.

Hush, commie.

But you, strangely, have a point.

Signs in Naples, FL can’t be over head high and Walmart is behind a berm. Can’t see the ugly.

Because abuse of power never occurs there?

Why are some of you so stuck in the capitalism/communism dichotomy?

As if you can only have one or the other. Between brutalist architecture and modern strip mall capitalism architecture, I’d take neither.

Mr. Coomer with a good take for once.

A government committee approved all those signs and designs which allowed them to be put there in such a way. They are ultimately responsible.

Ever been to Sanibel, FL? That it is not overrun by corporate logos is not an accident.

There are other choices, but you can let the localities make those choices. I lot of nicer suburbs like The Woodlands don’t allow colors and such in signs.

I dont really know what you mean by “abuse of power.” Anyway, Im not saying it could not happen, but then that wouldnt be a “communist” state if it did. It would be something else. Certainly that’s not what the people that invented communism had in mind. The state would have seized the plutocrat’s assets long ago. I think communism is a horrible system, I’m just saying that what is happening here is something different and trying to use Cold War-era thinking is holding people back.

Yes. Apparently, the only choices available are unfettered capitalist strip malls and sprawl, on the one hand, and massive brutalist communist housing units, on the other hand.

Can you elaborate a little more on this?

Disagree on this point. Almost all of the architecture I care about was produced through state funded projects.

Oh, please tell us about all the excess that you put into your home, seeing as how you would never build with the most affordable products available. Let me guess: stainless steel frame instead of wood frame? Marble floors in place of wood floors? Itailian clay tile roof in place of asphalt shingles? Brick drive in place of concrete.

Please, I'd love to know how you are so much better than the "capitalists".

I saw that tweet about how "depressing" capitalist architecture is, and it made me think about how depressing architecture (particularly housing) was in the Soviet Union:

Of course, the person who tweeted that would just say "sOvIet UnIoN WaS nOt ReAl cOmMuNiSm/sOCiaLIsM!!!111!"
