Russia on verge of biggest gain in Ukraine since summer

Zelensky should have crafted a peace deal when he had a chance.

Russian forces have nearly taken full control of Soledar, a small mining town in eastern Ukraine, placing Moscow on the verge of its most significant gain since August.
The town is located just north of Bakhmut, where Ukraine has so far held strong despite some of the fiercest fighting in the war.
In the past few days, Ukrainian troops in Soledar were defending against a vigorous assault from the Russian mercenary company Wagner Group, and fierce fighting was reported in the town’s administrative center on Monday.
The latest signs are that Russian and Wagner forces are now in control of Soledar after a four-day advance, Britain’s Defense Ministry said in an intelligence update on Tuesday.
Ukrainian Deputy Defense Minister Hanna Maliar said in a statement on Tuesday that fighting is still ongoing in Soledar, which has been largely destroyed by Russian shelling, according to the Kyiv Independent.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has acknowledged that fighting in Soledar was a “difficult and hard battle” for his troops.
“It is extremely difficult — there are almost no whole walls left,” Zelensky said in his nightly address on Monday.
“And what did Russia want to gain there? Everything is completely destroyed, there is almost no life left. And thousands of their people were lost: the whole land near Soledar is covered with the corpses of the occupiers and scars from the strikes.”

They didn’t happen to include pics of this did they?

But… Ukraine’s Miss Universe girl had Angel wings on her outfit.

"Ukraine should allow Russia to annex its territory" is such a bizarre opinion to hold.

What makes you think I'm happy about this? I don't cheer for war like the OT thread. Just the opposite.
Zelensky had a chance to get out and he chose death of his people instead. What a dummy.

What choice do they have?

The one they (and most sovereign entities throughout recorded history in similar situations) have taken. They're going to fight for their territory, and its absurd to expect them to do otherwise.

I guess we will never know because Zelensky listened to our State Department and told Putin to pound sand.

Weird that he didn't want to just cede all or a substantial part Ukraine's Black Sea coast to the Russians. How unreasonable of him.
What exactly would Ukraine get out of such an arrangement? A pinky promise not to come back in three years demanding more?

If it means we don't send another 100 million to Ukraine, I'll take it.

If Zelensky was smart he would have gave Putin assurances more than a year ago that he would not join NATO going forward and maybe form a relationship with Russia so they can live in peace. Now with Western interest involved Russia and Ukraine can never reconcile.

How many flags should I pixelate to combat this?

So your solution is for Ukraine to cede its sovereignty to Russia to avoid invasion? You actually think that is acceptable from Ukraine's perspective? They are just supposed to live with the sword of Damocles hanging over them in perpetuity, hoping that Russia approves of their every move?
Your post also ignores the EU, which is by far the larger concern for Russia vis-a-vis Ukraine in the first place.
Your opinion comes down to "just give Russia what it wants."

The images coming out of the Bakhmut area are straight out of WWII.

At this point I don't know what the answer is. I don't have enough data and only see the same news you see. But what's happening right now is not working.
