I think a lot of people underestimate POS people. There's plenty of em. They need triple the amount of attention as a respectable person, then they don't pay their bill, and then guess what, they try to sue to hospital. Same with home insurance. "Doesn't cost me anything to see if i can get a free roof". It may not cost you directly, but it costs the entire system. Nobody is doing anything for free. Medical care especially.

What about all the uninsured going to the ER? That is being paid for by everyone else.

Our radiologist volumes read at hospital locations has skyrocketed, but a big chunk of that is "self pay" in the ER. They're working more than ever, but our revenue isn't increasing at the rate of volume and a big part of that is uninsured in the ER

RN's start out around $40/hr it seems around here. That's fresh out of college.

With some O/T that would be a pretty sweet 1st career job for a 22-23 year old.

Texas, in the hospitals that participated in the data collection effort led by the state, spent over $1B in eleven months treating illegals that didn't pay.

Estimates up to half a trillion/yr in fraud expense.
Up to a quarter trillion in unnecessary expense d/t our med-mal system.
Up to a quarter trillion in ACA costs (even maintaining the cost of current subsidies and reapplying those two hard to insure pre-existing conditions).

So that is 20% of US healthcare costs that are being pissed away with no ROI.

hospitals regularly write to congress claiming they are losing money
Perhaps also one could examine their Administrator expense, especially in systems broadly dependent on taxpayer reimbursement. Often they are obscene vs competency.

You buy that? That fraud accounts for 2x overutilization? Genuinely asking.

You can ask this question about really anything that our government and big corporations that benefit from our tax money have a hand in.

Highest paid in the world. Which raises costs to the American consumer.

They’ve all but completely wiped out all competition. Hospitals, clinics, PBMs, etc merging. Gives them all the leverage to negotiate and effectively absorb billions from the “system” (aka us).

We literally allow PBMs to own insurance companies AND their own pharmacies. They are supposed to be the “middle man” between insurance, manufacturers and pharmacies yet they own 2 of the 3. They steer patients and dictate all of their healthcare needs, including how much they pay and also how much the providers get paid. This causes providers to increase prices just to stay afloat.

Then you have manufacturers in bed with PBMs as well. They have completely hidden “rebates” and plenty of other “fees” they trade without us ever seeing or knowing. We’re talking billions of dollars.

I don’t know what the answer is other than to maximize competition somehow and keep increasing transparency

I don't know if it's that high but in the $100s of billions. Not only in lost money to fraud but paying for fraud prevention.

If you include the fraud and the waste, it's closer to $1 trillion.

Only alternative explanation is that Americans are unhealthy as hell and their treatment is where all the money is going

Our system treats symptoms and doesn’t address causes.

Here’s where the money is going:

Odd premise. Very odd. But it matches that of idiots in the government who are limiting the number of medical school and residency slots base on the same premise.

Treating the gimmedats and the do-nothings.

Imagine someone who can't manage their own educations, family planning, or professions now in charge of their own health.

Fat assess with "the suga" still eating candy by the fist full.

That healthcare isn't free. Unless you're them.

We pay more for medicine than the rest of the world and our doctors and nurses make more. Specialists are about equal.

These are just facts that are part of your cost.

No one is doing any of this shite out of the kindness of their heart. It's also why healthcare can never be free.

Regulators and Middlemen are problems. Insurance companies are Middlemen. The amount of documentation that every visit requires is staggering. When was the last time your doctor looked at you instead of a computer screen?
