Wrong. People didn’t get it backwards. The funding would have come from constitutionally protected education trust funds. Short sighted Jeff Landry wanted to use it instead of the traditional one-time stipends payments for teachers.
Hence, they wanted to use savings from debt payments to pay teachers.

What?!? Coaches get at least $15,000 extra to coach a sport they love. Some good ones make much more than a Principal

The public schools are woke and suck.
Private/parochial is not what it used to be or should be.
They went to 4 fricken days a week.
We have had to resort to home school.
So, I already pay a shitload of taxes and get nothing in return.
Why the hell would I vote for an increase?

You dont even know what these funds were set up for. In fact, teachers dont even know, thats why there is so much money in them. Just sitting there, unused
quote:
The funds are constitutionally protected and have balances of approximately $2 billion — the Education Excellence Fund, and the Louisiana Quality Education Trust Fund.
Education Excellence Fund - proceeds from the tobacco settlement. 85% of the appropriation is distributed to local school systems and charter schools based on the most recent Minimum Foundation Program. 15% of the appropriation is distributed to non-public schools
Louisiana Education Quality Trust Fund - endowment of chairs for eminent scholars, enhancement of the quality of academic, research, or agricultural within a community college, college, or university, recruitment of superior graduate students, provide compensation to school board professional instructional employees, ensure an adequate supply of superior textbooks, library books, and equipment, to fund elementary and secondary student academic achievement, or vocational-technical skill, fund summer school remediation programs and preschool programs, fund the teaching of foreign languages in schools, fund scholarships or stipends to prospective teachers in critical teacher shortage area
AKA as grant money. Which teachers were no longer writing grants for

Yes, I do. I also simply stated a fact. That is exactly where the teacher pay raise would have come from. I also do not think they were entitled to it, which is why I voted against it.

There are some really bad educators out there. But you won’t improve the caliber of candidate, or the level of motivation for entering the field, by grossly underpaying the people who perform the job.
When you consider a large number of people send their kids to private school in Baton Rouge because the current public school system is a zoo, then you might understand people's trepidation for rewarding incompetency.
FWIW, i voted for the amendment, as i have a nephew who is a public school teacher. But even he laughs at the bullshite articles stating Louisiana public schools are now near top of the country or whatever the propaganda was.

Louisiana Education Quality Trust Fund (Permanent Fund)
Created by constitutional amendment in 1986 following settlement of offshore oil and gas revenue disputes with the federal government. The fund functions as an endowment; investment earnings support educational programs while the principal is generally protected from appropriation.
Quality Education Support Fund (Support Fund)
Also established through the 1986 constitutional amendment creating the LEQTF structure. Receives investment earnings from the Permanent Fund and distributes money annually to elementary, secondary, and higher education programs, technology, and instructional initiatives via BESE and the Board of Regents.
The two above are commonly conflated - though they are separate state funds - and referred to as 8(g) after the amendment made to the federal Outer Continental Shelf Lands Act
Education Excellence Fund (EEF)
Created by constitutional amendment in 1999 as part of the state tobacco settlement framework. Receives dedicated tobacco settlement revenues and investment earnings to support K-12 education programs that primarily focus on classroom instruction and educational enhancement efforts.

We pay enough in taxes. I’m not opposed to paying teachers more but take it from somewhere else. We don’t need to be taxed any more than we already are now.
This is 1000% truth. Louisiana state government can very easily give teachers a pay raise. They'd just have to eliminate or downsize several of the many redundant, fraudulent, and/or useless programs/positions to do so. You think that will happen soon? Government is never your friend.

This should tell you all you need to know about how "underpaid" teachers are.
If they voted for it you would be calling the teachers stupid for taking from their retirement.

I voted no because a teacher told me to. They are worried about the State stealing from the retirement fund and the raise is the bait.
I voted no because I do no trust the state legislature to not take too much money from the retirement fund. My mother relies on that thing.

Thank you. Some people do not understand what the fund is for.

And hell why stop at teachers why not apply your logic to all professions. Lawyers can pick any law firm they want according to your logic. A doctor can pick any hospital or dr office to work at and any field of medicine according to your logic
Idk about lawyers but why did you put Doctors (who are recruited years prior to residency, receive 5-6 figures in signing & relocation incentives, and can afford to live anywhere in the country) in your argument??
You want to add nurses & blue collar tradesmen while you're at it??

....and rightfully so. Football coaches spend more time at school during football season and also they spend more time with their players than their kids.

You’re clearly ignorant to education and administration.

They’re actually one of the most underpaid professionals in our country.
Nah. It's a 3/4-time job. It's not a full time job. And it's a government job.

Considering their responsibilities, what they’re tasked with and do (and deal with) on a daily basis, and what they’re paid, it’s a wonder we have anyone left who still wants to do it.
There will always be people who are up for 16 weeks PTO, off by 3:00-3:30 every day, government holidays, and government (early) retirement and benefits.
Hardly any government employees get rich on the salary. People do it for the other benefits.
And studies have shown that teachers are no more likely to take work home than their middle management private sector counterparts, before you start with the "grading papers at home" trope.

BS, if they would leave their politics at home, maybe they would be better appreciated.

This is one of the topics more people bitch about and have no clue.

When you fail teaching reading and math, because you are hell bent on politics, you are not a teacher. You are a fool. I hire builders and trades. Fail at the job, hit the streets. Where you belong.
