Yep. I refuse to pay more taxes so educators can make $39 more per week.

I voted no because a teacher told me to. They are worried about the State stealing from the retirement fund and the raise is the bait.

The one thing I'd say about this is a lot of teachers are Democrats. Especially the women. They would vote against their best interests just because a Republican is governor. Or they are doing it because of redistricting.

And judging by some of the YouTube ads it was Republicans that were yes on the raises and Democrats no.

You wouldn't pay more taxes for this.

But last go around we did vote against lowering income tax. So congrats.

I understand. Last time the teacher raise was voted against, the funding was going to be a tax increase. You’re welcome

they did do a good job, perhaps they would be paid more.
maybe if people knew how to raise their fricking kids instead of relying on the government the children would do better? See how this street goes both ways? I guarantee you I can flip the teachers at private and public schools in Shreveport, Monroe, Baton Rouge, and New Orleans and the grades would not noticeably change between the two. Schools that have community support typically produce great students

Other than Cassidy being booted, the results were very disappointing!
This state and parish suck!

The system isn’t failing.

No one is willing to address the real issue concerning poor educational rankings. The real issue is the high level of impoverished households, who do not stress the importance of education.

Where would Louisiana rank if you remove Nola, BR and Shreveport public schools?

Yes teachers deserve massive raises. Educating our youth, babysitting your children and essentially having larger impacts on your kids than you do as a parent.

How so? Retirement fund is a different matter

No it isn't. Retirement is part of their compensation.

ETA: I oppose any and all teacher raises until pensions and the best, nearly free, health insurance you can find is taken off the table. Their full compensation is nearly 20k more than the base salary (lowball estimate). They only want to discuss the salary because they know idiots won't put pen to paper and work out the value of the benefits.

My brother and his wife are educators with a little over 25 years in the system. My brother got his masters over summers and holidays in some accelerated program about 5 years ago and has gotten 2 promotions in management since then. He told me that if he teaches 2 more years and then he and his wife retire.
They will receive 10k a month plus healthcare for life.
They will be 49 or 50 when they retire.
When he first started teaching, and told me what he made. I remember thinking, I couldn’t live on that. He should find a better job.

Now I wish I’d had the foresight to look ahead 25 years

Property taxes are EVIL!

Never vote yes for a property tax, ever.

I know plenty of people older than 70 and are very hard workers and intelligent. Very capable of working if they choose.

Being a Judge is not the same as being a roofer.

IDGAF about teachers. They make plenty, with great retirement and great full family insurance forever.

It's time we stop talking about pay raises for a 3/4 year employee.

frick!!

No. Teachers do not deserve massive raises. They literally chose a profession and sign contracts agreeing to the pay and terms, including having 2 months off, all holidays off, and have a true pension.

Possibly. Is it a merit based raise or is it because they’ve been there hanging out for a number of years? Also, cut out some of the ridiculous administrative expenses these school districts have. Sorry, the answer is not give the districts more money. Government is inefficient in any market place.

And then they can go teach in a private school or come up with a brand new career path at the ripe old age of 50. Salary and benefits are negligible since they have lifetime benefits and a sweet retirement package.

Teachers salaries aren’t great, but the benefits are INCREDIBLE…let’s not talk about all that, though.

FIFY.
Alief ISD, a shitty arse school district in Houston, is pretty poor. 80 different languages are spoken at home, 27% black. The black African (Nigerian, etc.) parents have kids that go to A&M to play football and get degrees in things like accounting The non African blacks ... do not. Same "underpaid" teachers, same facilities, what must be the difference? Racism?

They don’t make their money by producing. They make their money by taxing people who DO produce. If anything, they’re overpaid.
