If all of this is true, it's a condemnation of the selection and training process and not a problem with the ships deployment itself.

Carriers are floating naval aviation stations. They are not meant to be tied up pier side. That's what the US has the US air force for.

Solders and sailors suffering mental distress and breakdowns in tense situations are 100% a result of the weak, lax selection and training process changes from the democrat administrations prior. I hope Pete is addressing these devastating problems as he has said he would, but undoing the damage is not an instant process.

Keep this in mind. dumb asses like Robert Gates, Leon Panetta, Martin Dempsey, Lloyd Austin and Mark Miley instituted these policies, Sailors and soldiers got to carry stress cards in bootcamp and when they pulled the card the instructors had to back off them and met them reduce their stress levels before continuing their training for the day.

Gee, I wonder why that didn't work on the Abe Lincoln?

Now as a side note, 8 people in approximately 6000 attempted suicide which is about 0.13% or about 1 attempt per 750 people.

For comparison in 2024, 0.8% if U.S. adults reported attempting suicide in the proceeding 12 months.

Now consider these 8 attempts didn't take place on the Abe Lincoln alone, it took place across the whole strike force, approximately 5-7 ships in the immediate strike group (7,500 to 8,500 ships personal) and as many as 15 ships in the broader task force (ships company of 10,000+)

So 8 suicides attempts over 7500 to 10000 personnel, while tragic is simply hyperbole as far as this story is concerned.

Soft. Get them out of the service. Imagine what the guys who served at sea in WWII would think. Hell, these people weren’t even under fire.

I have a Vietnam era navy veteran customer and I asked him, his response was they're all pussies.

When I was stationed at NH Pensacola, I took in a sailor to our medical holding company. He threatened suicide while serving on a boomer sub. Those boats don't come up but had to medevac this dude. He didn't harm his self, just voiced that he wanted to.

Not uncommon. When my ship was ready to deploy to the Persian Gulf, we had numerous attempts from Navy personnel trying to sabotage our ship so they never had to leave.
Also, when I was stationed in Orlando, there was an attempted suicide almost every month in the nuclear program.

Without context, it’s a useless statement.

Would need to know the mental status of those people before.

Ask him how close he was to Viet Nam.
MOST sailors didn't get within 100 miles of the coast.

He was responding to questions from a US Senator. And this is hardly a state secret; stuff like this will appear in every suicide briefing (and there are a lot of them) the military gets. "During a 2026 deployment 8 sailors from a carrier group attempted suicide" will be on a PowerPoint slide at some point, probably next year.

Imagine thinking there wasn’t plenty of this type of thing in WW2. And honestly on all sides in any conflict that’s ever been fought.

There's quite a noticeable difference between WW2 sailors and the sailors of today.

Can you imagine if these guys were in the Northwest and North-central Pacific in the mid-1940s?

These guys are worried about loneliness and feelings while deployed at sea. The WW2 guys were under constant fire and the ever-present and very real fear of Kamikaze attacks. They. Are. Not. The. Same.

No one alarmed that none of them succeeded? They are in the military -- isn't their job to neutralize the enemy? And they can't even neutralize themselves? Just saying....

My point is, he doesn't have to answer questions from her or anyone in congress unless they have a congressional subpoena.

So why would he pen her a letter.

No, he doesn't, but it's not an unreasonable question and answering it wasn't unreasonable. She's a US Senator asking a simple, non-classified question about our military.

Maybe he should have posted on X that she should go frick herself because he doesn't answer to her. That would probably lead to more effective governance.

For context, annualized, that's about 1/4 the attempted suicide rate among Americans outside of the USSAL.

This is all an attempt to make Hegseth look bad. The senator likely heard about the eight attempts from a credible source, then asked the Navy Sec about it just to get it in his own writing to use for political purposes.

Carrier deployments always have suicide attempts. I'd be more surprised if none were successful.

Some sailors are on their first deployment and soon realize navy life isn't for them. Others receive Dear John letters. Some lose parents or siblings while deployed and don't take the news well. Some are just crazy. And likely many other reasons as well for someone to attempt suicide.

Often times there are even deaths of natural causes during deployments.

Because some of them want to be discharged and never had any true intent on taking their own life. Only the appearance of such.

Yeah...and how many of your fellow soldiers were alright in the head when they got back to the States? I know my cousin wasn't. He went through two failed marriages, a stint in prison, and a rehab facility before he was able to get his life back together after serving a combat tour in Iraq.
