I wonder what the normal number of attempts is on an air craft carrier over a 10 month period because I'm sure it isnt zero.

The Navy shoots for 6 months which was the standard since Vietnam. And those deployments usually involve port calls every few weeks. Since Vietnam there has never been a carrier stay out for 10 months with no port call. Even during 6 month deployments, the crew gets a port call every few weeks.
And they were conducting combat operations, not just cruising around like they would in peace time. This means people are working 18 hours days for 10 months straight with no downtime.
I am not saying this should result in suicide, but let's not pretend that it's like being on a holiday cruise ship sitting by the pool drinking margaritas.

I served back in the 90s and the mech infantry people were always doing this kind of stuff, and that was while not being deployed.
One guy killed a few people, then killed himself by my barracks dumpsters. One dude was found hanging in his locker. Another dude killed his entire family. One dude was killed in a car wreck where he was drunk and driving over 100mph.
Those mech infantry guys are usually only people the army would take and that's one of the lowest MOS you can get. So you'd expect higher standards in the navy. But overall, 8 over a year doesn't sound that crazy to me.

This, I cannot imagine what my grandfathers endured. It was a lot worse than being on an air conditioned ship with facebook and youtube.

We had 250 people on board. Two people attempted suicide, one of them successfully.

I really do feel for these sailors but I have a serious question. Why were the attempts unsuccessful?
