Everything and everyone is racist... except black people. Can we move on, now?

I don't think the peak is picky about what race it provides a lack of access for, it pretty much provides a lack of access for everyone.

Sounds about right. There used to be a whole organization of idiots like that called the Dangerous Sports Club where people would do things like hang glide over active volcanoes.

Graham Chapman of Monty Python was their most famous member. Not sure if “sit on an AIDS infected cock” was a challenge for them or just him on his off time, though.

and has a "colonial history". who knew ?

And I can’t believe nobody mentioned, with the man who Dear Madam Hillary Clinton was named for at its forefront.

Racist fricking mountain.

Snow is actually racist. It's always white and fresh when it falls.

While we are at it... you only hear people dredding "black ice" on the road when driving in the winter.

Meh. Let me know when they summit K2.

Keeping with the subject of the post, this article is from "Mountain Homies".

Getting a trip to Nepal to climb Mount Everest is less appealing to me than a trip to Jackson, MS.

The chance of death is likely higher in Jackson but I won’t freeze my arse off at altitude.

Everst does look like a white pointy hood, now that you mention it.

From what I understand, the native, rather dark skinned, Sherpas seem to fair better than anyone up there.

“Sherpas produce 30% more power than lowlanders at altitude. They have more capillaries per square centimeter of muscle than lowland climbers. They have bigger chests, greater lung capacity, as well as higher measures of all lung physiology, like peak flow.“

Oh fricking great here comes another bottomless pit the United States Government is going to waste our tax dollars on. Not to mention the ignorant commercials from the NFL on the subject.

mountaineering's 'colonial history'

technically speaking, this is 100% true. it had less to do with the actual colonization process, and more to do with the fact that only western Europeans were making legit summit attempts on unclimbed mountains in the 30's, 40's, and 50's.

not to mention, the economies of northern Pakistan, Nepal, and the rest of the Himalaya are almost wholly dependent on Western climbers.

i.e., honkey money

The eight blacks who climbed may have hired brown people to carry their (ahem) burdens.

The current group soliciting money to support their trip and to help them acclimate (especially the female wall climber from south Florida) will doubtless be carrying all their own gear and oxygen and even carry their own bodies back down to show the rest of the world how it should be done.
