"What you need to know about the attempted coup in Gabon"

Residents of Gabon's capital Libreville woke up to shots being fired and tanks patrolling streets early on Monday after military officers launched a coup attempt in the country.

A spokesman for Gabon's government said the chief military rebel who announced the coup attempt on state radio was arrested later on Monday.

Two of his accomplices were killed when security forces stormed the building, according to a statement by the presidency, and the remaining two were also in state custody.

"The situation is under control," the statement said.

Gabon's President Ali Bongo has been out of the country since October after suffering a stroke and is currently in Morocco receiving medical treatment.

France has a permanent force of 300 soldiers in Gabon. The United States also sent about 80 soldiers to Gabon last week in response to possible violence in the Democratic Republic of Congo after a presidential election there.

Gabon is a shithole that no American should give two fricks about and no American troops should be there.

The troops were sent in preparation for what's about to happen in Congo.

They had a election and they won't release the results.

Is there anything in Gabon we need?

If not bring back those 80 soldiers.

Awful situation. Those uniforms are tight, though.

Our troops should be nowhere near that continent.

We do have a US Embassy to protect so I can legitimately see why we sent 80 soldiers there to protect those Americans.

And we have been giving them technical assistance with the Prisons they are building.

In all seriousness, why is this even worthy of discussion? A handful of military officers in a Third World country attempted a coup. The remainder of the nation’s military put them down with great dispatch. Their heads will likely be on pikes tomorrow.

And now, in sports .....

What happens in elections in the DRC is not the prerogative of the United States. Our troops have zero business there.

We fund an international organization whose express purpose is to handle things like this.

Our "troops" are all over that continent. So is Al Qaeda and ISIS.

Fight them there or fight them here.

Will Wakanda send peacekeepers?

Like many other African nations, Gabon will have a “government of the week.”

I need to find an old MAD Magazine which addressed this.

They had a version of Solomon Grundy which covered the seven day reign of a generalissimo in Latin America.
