Mayor Lumumba against Jackson Zoo moving from West Jackson

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) - The Jackson Zoo board has voted to move the zoo from West Capitol Street to LeFleur's Bluff State Park.
quote:
We do not support the move of the zoo from West Jackson," Lumumba told a crowd gathered on the steps of City Hall.
Applause followed his vocal opposition to moving the zoo to northeast Jackson.
He was joined by Council President Charles Tillman in whose ward the zoo sits and Working Together Jackson. That organization represents 35 community institutions, including the Zoo Area Progressive Partnership.
The mayor said the city will not support losing another resource in west Jackson.
"Other measures can take place. There is, right now at this time, we talked about a contract which is expiring," said Mayor Lumumba, "I said that we would use all, we would look at all tools in our shed as an opportunity to demonstrate what we feel."
According to city officials, the contract with the zoo expires in September.
Each year the city makes a payment to the zoo. That amount now stands at $900,000, though the zoo has requested more.
"West Jackson and its residents will not shoulder the blame for the burden for the Jackson Zoo's inability to survive," said Heather Ivery with Working Together Jackson. "There are many factors that have contributed to its steep decline in attendance over the last 10 years, many of which are the results of years of neglect."
Mayor Lumumba called the $50 million investment needed to move the zoo disrespectful when the same investment has not been made in the current location.
He would not elaborate on other resources that the city would use to stop the move.
Long story short for those of you outside of Jackson, the zoo has been slowly falling apart in west Jackson and the crime around it is so bad people hardly go there anymore. They’ve lost some accreditations and a lot of animals.
Zoo committee votes to move the zoo to the state park next door to the chilrens museum in a very high traffic area next to I-55 in a much better part of town. Still in Jackson. Now mayor and city council are raising hell. It’s been very entertaining

I’ve been saying that Baton Rouge would be Jackson, Miss. within 5 years.
Looks like we were ahead of them on the curve on the zoo thing.

Kenneth Stokes playing the race card as usual.
The Zoo will get moved. You’re correct, this will be fun to watch.

Too much insulation from LSU down highland and that’s a big big pocket of the city but I understand your general point. But it will not be 5 years.

Sooooo, Jackson had the sense to move the zoo out of its eternal shithole and Baton Rouge decided its eternal shithole was still the best fit?
Sad sad day when you have to say “You see those people in Jackson? We oughta be more like them”

The zoo has been spreading all over Jackson for some years now

If by "zoo" you mean Jackson, then yes.

When you’ve got a mayor named Lamumba, you are headed to Zimbabwe territory

How about Jackson itself?

Disagree, I think it’s got a ton of potential in the new proposed location. A healthy zoo would generate a ton of traffic from all over the state coming to visit the area.

The problem is you have an actual great zoo just north of y’all in Memphis. That generates traffic.

In Jackson? The tools are either in disrepair or have been stolen.
Jackson was lost a long time ago.

Jackson zoo makes me feel sorry for the animals. Most seem to neurotically pace because they lack stimulation and their enclosures are too small. Hope something changes.

I never knew Jackson had a zoo. When I heard “Jackson Zoo” I just assumed it was a reference to the city itself.

They should close the zoo. Having animals in a poverty area can be a bad role model for the at risk children.

This is typical Jackson. The mayor isn't supporting the city of Jackson as a whole, he is supporting the black part of Jackson. It sounds like he thinks that one side of a city only benefits from tax dollars that are generated in those particular zip codes. Moving the zoo to the proposed location is a winning move for the entire city, an increase in revenue. Jackson's politicians don't understand this and or don't care. it's all about race and pandering to the black voting base. The zoo will wind up in Madison or Flowood and Jackson will lose, again.
Edit: this is pretty much how the race card politics play out nationwide.
Also, I lived in Jackson for a few years and never went anywhere near that zoo. I do remember that on I20 the signage announcing the exits for the Jackson Zoo and Jackson State University were on the same sign. I think there was some stink about that, I can't remember.
