Anything getting “tentpole release” money behind it ends up being a licensed property or remake because of the higher likely built in audience.
A film getting a release that slowly goes wider based on word of mouth doesn’t really happen anymore, at least partially because the contract between distributors and theaters drop the amount made by the distributor for each week after release, meaning that their best chance is to heavily front load a release.
