re: Let me get this straight, the main reason we are doing this is to bring more jobs to US?

No trade war necessary

Why do we need more jobs when we have the lowest unemployment rate in the world and just had an absolute stellar jobs report? The government now wants our country to just work hard instead of smart? Help me understand. Those are very low paying jobs. The only people who will want those jobs he’s deporting left and right. Right now all that’s happening is money is going out of Americans pockets and going straight into the federal government.
manufacturing is low paying jobs?

It's not just about jobs. Unfair tariffs against US consumers force our taxpayers to fund other country's governments. What's wrong with fighting for fair trade and using the spending power of the US to negotiate?

This isn’t about jobs, it’s about not relying on China for everything we need. Most of these factories will be run by robots. That’s clearly stated every time the Trump administration talks about this

I appreciate your response, this is what I’m looking for.

Uncouple ourselves from China. If China goes unchecked, they will kick our arse within 25 years without firing a bullet. If that means higher prices for your plastic Chinese trinkets, then oh well.
I like the sound of this.
But Trade wars and bullying our neighbors and friends into doing more trade deals with China doesn’t help that cause though….

I just don’t understand why we can’t have free trade.

Right
Again, the point of these tariffs seems to change with the wind, even within Trump’s own administration
It’s either 5-D chess negotiating art of the deal or “we needed a hard reset and the tariffs are permanent” based on who you ask
It can’t be both

I shall try.
Previous presidents have overinflated out government in order to create government jobs with the intent of artificially lowering the unemployment numbers. We have seen a precipitous drop-off in manufacturing the last 2 decades, so now we have severe problem of not being self sustainable. Trump isn't talking about bringing in "more jobs" to the US; he's specifically been speaking at "manufacturing jobs." This resolves two problems: it fixes our manufacturing issue as well as creates real jobs for people that are not government ones.
If you want to see a real world example of the problem just look at the COVID crisis. We had a massive shortage of gloves and PPE products. Why? They are manufactured in China. If we were to suffer any sort of crisis again, then we could be cut off from the rest of the world and be in a really bad spot.

All of you guys here today want to quit your Cush job today and go work in a factory?
I don't know you but this statement is very suggestive of your personality.
The country we have today including the greatest economy the world has ever seen, was built on the backs of guys who clocked in an out on the whistle. Self worth, pride, work ethic, integrity, and livelihoods are built in factories. Not just whatever product is getting loaded on the train.

Keep in mind he's not doing this because of current conditions. He's doing it because he says he's held these views for 30 years and in Trump 1, people like Gary Cohn were around to stop him, but in Trump 2, they're not. So we get this. From Trump 1:
I agree with this but what I think what Gary Cohn fails to see is that service economy jobs (doctors, lawyers, engineers, bankers, hair dressers, etc.) don't exist without a major sector adding value to the overall economy. We do that by making stuff.
With that said we still make stuff in the U.S. However manufacturing is just flat. Here is some info to chew on:
First, Industrial Production: Manufacturing (NAICS): This index measures the real output of manufacturing establishments in the U.S., providing insights into production trends over time.
We have been flat since 2014.
Next, Producer Price Index by Industry: Total Manufacturing Industries: This index monitors changes in selling prices received by domestic producers for their output, indicating inflationary trends within manufacturing. Printing money is the driver behind this chart.
Lastly, All Employees, Manufacturing: This series tracks the number of employees in the manufacturing sector, reflecting employment trends and labor market health within the industry. Can tariffs increase this number? Looks like a a lot of manufacturing jobs were replaced by technology because manufacturing output remains steady has manufacturing employment has declined since its peak in 1980.

This is why chyna is fighting so hard against it.
We must un-couple.

Under biden, native english speakers would be the minority (by a long shot) whenever my wife and I went. Now, there might be 3 or 4 in the entire store.
They're not going anywhere.

And manufacturing jobs will continue to be increasingly automated. This policy will make things more expensive, lose us service jobs, and not be compensated by what we pick up. It's a loser policy.

I'm not convinced on the utility of the current tariff strategy, but you're also not considering that we could replace existing, less useful jobs with new, more useful jobs.
I don't even know if this current disruption is all about creating more jobs at home. That might be a side goal but when we look back the primary goal may be is to foment a laobaixing revolution in China to topple the CCP.
