He was just comparing prices of a short-term oil spike vs the loss of American cities due to Iran having a nuclear weapon. The fact that he threw in the navy-city of San Diego means that he wasn't saying "give them a liberal city...that would be OK."
If he had meant that, he would have just said "San Francisco."

Correct, to avoid the scenario to OP mentions. I’ve seen several leftists on X who initially said they were outraged by this come back and acknowledge that they got it wrong. They’re in the minority of course, but at least some are intellectually honest.
