Very interesting questions that arise because of those are fascinating including what does trump do and when if anything

Trump can do nothing and it means nothing unless he wants to run for political office again at which point he would raise the issue then and say that it was invalid

He can try and fight but raise it’s invalid. Either way it’s going to scotus

I assume Trump wouldn’t show up for the show trial.

I suppose there’s an argument for being there and trying to turn the proceedings against the Democrats though.

From the constitution:

When the President of the United States is tried, the Chief Justice shall preside


And there's the rub. Trump isn't the president so it can (but does not have to be) someone else.

Puts a finer point on the "can you impeach someone not in office" question.

Yes, and it's pretty clear and explicit:

"The Senate shall have the sole Power to try all Impeachments. When sitting for that Purpose, they shall be on Oath or Affirmation. When the President of the United States is tried, the Chief Justice shall preside"

I didn't expect Trump would run again but if his plan is to throw his support into certain R's to unseat incumbents he can frick around that way. I say knock yourselves out preventing him from running for Pres again so everyone can see who the bigger assholes are.

Article 1, Section 3, Clauses 6 and 7

The Senate shall have the sole Power to try all Impeachments. When sitting for that Purpose, they shall be on Oath or Affirmation. When the President of the United States is tried the Chief Justice shall preside; And no Person shall be convicted without the Concurrence of two thirds of the Members present.
