Louisiana would be better-served going the free 2-year community college route like TN, RI, and a few other states have done and scaling back TOPS to award the "top" (pun intended) students.

You're on an LSU message board for once quit with what the party says or go-to DU and don't come back because you offer nothing.

Ok where are you going to send them for less money??? No where will be cheaper than instate tuition at a Louisiana institution without TOPS.

I would encourage you to do some research on this subject since you are so out of touch on it.

He's been a disaster. Making Blanco look competent.

The goal of tops is to keep students in Louisiana after high school graduation.

Tops paid for all but $400.00 of my daughter's education at LSU. She was a double gold medalist in Electrical Engineering and Computer Engineering.

After graduating, she had 9 job interviews. NONE WERE IN THE STATE OF LOUISIANA. She took a job in Dallas.

You tell me if the state invested wisely.

No one wants to “do it right” because no one trusts that the state government will donaway with the higher taxes... ever

the biggest reason we're in our current debt situation is b/c of the repeal of the Stelly Tax Plan, which Jindal opposed and JBE sponsored

The way I read this, you’re saying Jindal opposed repealing the Stelly tax plan? That’s weird. I remembered him being all to happy to repeal the increased tax aspect of it while keeping the tax cuts. Stelly would have had us on solid ground. I was pissed when they half-asses the Stelly repeal. Either keep it or get rid of the whole thing and go back completely to the previous scheme.

Jindal was the worst thing fiscally to happen to Louisiana in a long time. For a smart guy, he certainly had trouble with numbers.

I have a senior who is trying to make his college decision. It's not so much TOPS for me, but the outright refusal to fund higher ed that has me troubled. My kid already has nice scholarship offers from 3 other SEC schools. If TOPS is eliminated and more cuts are made to higher ed, I will tell him he is not going to LSU. And my wife and I both have 2 degrees from LSU. It will break my heart, but I'm not sending my kid into that uncertainty.

Leaks info about cuts at the front end, but no doubt will include taxes at the back end.

TOPS may keep students at home, but as you point out; it doesn't tie graduates to La; nor should it.

TOPS was fine when we had money. We don't right now.

It's dead because the industry we kept "feeding" is a transient industry that doesn't put down roots.

We pumped over a Billion dollars into films and what is left?

He will threaten to cut TOPS and I will support that. Mississippi has no such welfare and we should not either. The republicans should let him cut that.

So cut programs for hard working kids and continue to fund deadbeats and kids who suck in classrooms?

NO thanks

WTF does that even mean? What does Miss have to do with this?

Before a single tax on the regular people is raised or renewed the income tax needs to be applied to the billions government retirees collect in Louisiana every year.

It doesn't seem right to collect income tax on retirement benefits.

again, i made this exact argument

in high school

the problem is that this would be spun as racism by the urban-black groups AND spun along the "north/south" lines by poor, white rural populations

you remember wrong. the only reason he didn't veto it was because the legislature (again, led in part by JBE) had a veto-proof majority

Jindal even warned the legislature to slow implementation of the rollback and they even refused that

those "tax cuts" aren't on Jindal. they are partially on JBE, who, again, sponsored the bill

Jindal gets the blame for all the "tax credit" behaviors (like the film tax credit boondogle)

They collect income tax on my retirement benefits, why not the benefits of govt. workers too?

Wouldn't that be the fair thing to do? Either that are don't tax anyone's benefits.

Actually the initial repeal occurred under Blanco, and yes Jindal initially opposed the repeal of the rest of Stelly; however, flush with cash the Legislature steamrolled the repeal through and Jindal had no choice but to sign the bill.
