Thomas actually gets his clerks from a lot of non-T14 schools, but still top 20-25ish schools.

He came and spoke to us at UF law in 2010. I distinctly remember him saying they needed to do a better job of looking outside of the Ivy League for clerks. I just looked at the list of his clerks. He's had a few SEC law school grads since then. He's had clerks since then from Alabama, Georgia, Florida, LSU and Vandy

Lol, no. D.C. has some of the nicest, wealthiest, safest suburbs in the country (courtesy of your tax dollars). That's where they live.

So does New Orleans and Chicago, but if you're actually trying to say D.C. isn't ALSO crime-ridden, then you must not really understand D.C.

OP just said near crime-ridden areas which, if they live in D.C., is true. This shite ain't rocket surgery.

Though you can thank Trump for a decline in their shite crime stats...

Everyone focuses on the symptoms rather than the cause.

“We have no government armed with power capable of contending with human passions unbridled by morality and religion…Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.”
John Adams

We don’t need new laws or institutions, we need men and women who fear God more than they love themselves.

Utilize some of the law schools in the SEC. LSU, Vanderbilt, Tennessee, Alabama, Texas. etc.

For to long Presidents have nominated Ivy League grads, and they don't have real world experience. They all are members of one large social club.

Sweating to make payroll. Sitting in a conference with an actual human client rather than the executive committee of a multinational corporation. Vacationing at Panama City beach rather than cape cod, Martha’s Vineyard, Hamptons, etc.

First real answer.

Now, how do you believe that helps them more than the ivies?

Very few of the justices have ever tried a jury case. I’ll bet most of them have ever represented a private client. The OP is spot on about avoiding the Ivies. We need people who were real lawyers with practical experience.

There are not a lot of relevant skills for being a SCOTUS justice that comes from litigation.

There are plenty of good lawyers that come out of non-T-14s. That said T-14s are generally used as a shorthand for competent attorneys and they are the ones that get the clerkships and end up on the justice track. They are the ones that get the relevant experience.

It hardens them to the realities of life, rather than insulated elitist existence of their ivory towers.

Barrett isn't Ivy League. She is from Louisiana and went to Notre Dame for law school but she's as useless as tits on a bull.

The realities of life don't help anyone interpret the Constitution, though. If anything, they would hamper one's ability to interpret the document objectively.

There is no objective interpretation. That’s why appellate courts have panels of judges/justices.

I can understand that, but does the law school choice make them elitist or more qualified?

They all had to do a variety of clerkships, ADA, DA, State Court, Fed Court work, etc. - it's possible that the early experiences did give them that life experience, no?

We do not need a supreme court made up of lawyers like Buddy Caldwell.

Yeah this gets brought up when Kennedy does his schtick during the nomination process.

Being a good trial court judge and a good appellate judge are completely different things. Litigation helps a LOT with being a good trial court judge and helps very little with being an appellate judge.

As opposed to dingbats like Sotomayor and Ketanji Brown Michael Jackson?

The objective should be to nominate and confirm the best candidates. Obviously that isn't done too often, whether they are nominated by Dubya, Soetoro, or Brandon.
