I've been an advocate of cutting the Ivy League off from all DC ties for two decades now. I think Republican presidents should start going to red state courts for judicial nominees. Not federal courts. There's no constitutional requirement for that. And yes, avoid even friendly judges that went to Ivy league schools. The "elite" institutions need to be sent wandering the proverbial wilderness for awhile.

This is only partly true. Yes the skill set is different. But every judge at every level should have some real world practical experience representing clients, trying cases, etc.

Why would this be necessary for an appellate court judge? It's all theoretical at that stage and the record is already made.

Sounds like you want lower standards. Objectively speaking, getting into an Ivy law school requires a much more impressive application. I thought we all here just wanted the best and brightest?
