That's the convenient canard that people like to bandy about. Carter kept aid and activity up to the Shah until January 1979 when Iranian Air Force units and Army units began to mutiny/ side with the protestors. At that point the Shah was done. Plus he was dying of cancer.

But Carter DID NOT abandon the Shah or Iran until US Intel community said he was done. At worst he expressed concern about human rights abuses but never withheld a dollar or any material aid.

Then he opened up dialogue with Khomeini because he was directing all the action and the US had significant investment there.....and now the Shah had lost control.

The Iranian citizenry are unarmed. The mullahs want power and will kill anyone who threatens that power. They are already moving their wealth out of the country that they "stole" from their unarmed citizenry.

The US will help those who want freedom and will accept, in return for that help, black gold, Texas tea...... until paid in full.

I'm all for shipping arms to them. But beyond that we should not involve ourselves in any meaningful way like using our military.

We don't know who we are dealing with on the other side. Could be our friends, could be something else and even then we should stay away and be mostly spectators.

Do you know who the main people are that are running the protests and revolution? US Intel apparently does not either.

So you wanna ship weapons, and maybe just label them "for honest citizens only"

Therein lies the problem with getting involved there at this time. But shipping a few guns into the Kurdish areas in the Northwest is pretty low risk. We know the Kurds. We don't know anyone else at this point.

I certainly would not be shipping Stingers or Javelins until we know the players. Bur Some ARs and some ammo.....real low risk at this time. Ship them to Northern Iraq and smuggle across the border and see who is asking.

I was alive during that time. I am fully aware of what. Carter and his NSC determined that the Shah could not survive the unrest and Carter sent a general to Iran to tell the military to stand down. He then facilitated Khomeini back to Iran.

Not really facilitated. Khomeini was THE player at the time and they had no one else to deal with. Certainly not Bakhtiar, he was an emasculated PM that did not have any real public support. Khomeini was coming back whether we wanted him to or not at the time. The Shah was toast. Shah missed his opportunity a few years before that whe the Iraqis offered to handle him. After that he went to France.

Huyser was there and while there discovered that the Iranian air force had been totally infiltrated as were some army units that were jumping ship and siding with the demonstrations. But really by the time Huyser showed up it was too late. Most American businesses like TRW had bugged out that summer ......as they were CIA types and saw the writing on the wall especially in Tehran and after what happened in Abadan.

You should go back and read the history between the Shah and Khomeini. It's fascinating in that Khomeini NEVER denied what he wanted and the Shah tried to placate him thinking that if he showed restraint he could survive. Khomeini and his supporters would just up the activity as they smelled more weakness. Abadan is a great example. They were able to blame the Shah for the theater massacre when just about everyone KNEW it was Khomeini's supporters who locked the doors and set fire to the place. But the Shah was not popular there as he had not paid a lot of the oil workers there for a few months.

No. When it was apparent that he was THE player in January / February 1979 Carter and the CIA as well as NSA determined that we should open dialogue with him if only to protect Americans and American interests there. Shah was toast by this time and on his way to Egypt.

As of noon eastern time today, there is more military airplane flights in the air over the United States that I’ve ever seen.

Military flights

Tap the “U” icon upper right and see military only.

It's OK. They have all seen Top Gun 2 and know what 80s era fighters can do with the right guy in "the box".

A lot of truth here. They are oppressed. They hate their gov't in large part.

You are exactly right. They want stability in that region as well.
