Doesn't answer my question. Do we have any idea who we are dealing with. I get that the citizenry is fed up, but who do you deal with?

Hell no. No more nation-building. If we're going to wade into that mess, we need to do the bare minimum to suppress military actions against the population. Fine if we want to arm whatever rebel groups are most favorable to our interests.
But that's it. They need to rise up and get their sh*t together on their own.
Nation building is a synonym for a 20-year military occupation and winless war. No thanks. We can't afford any more of those.
It's not our job to westernize the ME.
