I see a lot of laid off people worried about h1b, why don’t they just go improve their own country if this one doesn’t want them?

Could you be slightly less vague?

quote:

What does H-1B visa mean?
The H-1B is a temporary (nonimmigrant) visa category that allows employers to petition for highly educated foreign professionals to work in “specialty occupations” that require at least a bachelor's degree or the equivalent.

Easy rule:
If someone in the government tells you something will be good, you can bet the house that it won't be

Is a visa like a Louisiana purchase card?

Yeah government always lies. If you’re pregnant, smoke all the cigs you want and get drunk every night. The kid will be fine.

H1B is bad for America. It allows you to bring in foreigners to work for less than Americans normally would. Tech companies claim they need it but it is just so they can pay less.

It is not good when they replace entire IT departments with H1B visa holders like Disney.

this.

i work in IT but as a network engineer. one of the products i support replaced all american based support with h1bs and overseas indian call centers and it took a huge hit in quality. whenever i escalate something to tier 2 or 3, it's always an American (of any race) that is more knowledgeable.

the tier 1 guys i work with are just looking at knowledge base articles and telling me to do things i've already done.

Anyone with a lick of common sense knows cigarettes and alcohol aren't good for a fetus.

People with common sense doesn't need Daddy Government to tell them that.

Let me guess, you are over 70 and vote Democrat.

I keep seeing tv ads for Target's new Consumer cellular cell phone system. They very proudly proclaim their "100% U.S. based customer service". That's a pretty direct shot at WalMart's StraightTalk and I hope it becomes a trend.

H1B can be good to attract and retain people with specific skills that are hard to find. Think of emerging technologies where there aren't many experts yet, or programs out there to widely teach a skill.

As other mentioned, they are often used to hire workers at a lower wage than an American would accept for the same position.

The H1B recipient is also stuck in a difficult situation. If they leave their current position for a better paying job, that company has to be willing to take on the HR and legal burden of transferring their H1B. The job also has to be a similar job that is considered in short supply. The H1B recipient can also lose their spot in line for a green card. I have had several Indian coworkers that stayed in position far too long because of this.

H1B was the tool that allowed companies to outsource IT jobs to shitty Indian companies with shitty engineers with fake certifications.

What's funny about this strategy is that it more often than not bites them in the arse. Body shops like Tata Consulting or Wipro believe in quantity over quality. Their pitch is if you need 30 guys in a helpdesk, you'll get 30 guys. The level of expertise and knowledge on the other hand...hey that doesn't matter because you're paying pennies on the dollar.

It’s good for Tigerdroppings. It allows Chicken to legally hire staff on the cheap.

If H1B goes away, we’ll all have to pay to post here so Chicken can maintain his current profit margins.

I don't think it is. I'd even go so far as to say we need something like the Jones Act for some of the main fields that use H-1B workers.

My reasons are, first, that many of the software jobs that H-1B holders work in are among the last jobs where an American can earn a middle-class income without a professional degree. Do we want to further eviscerate our middle class?

Second, I just don't think the H-1B workers are all that good. There are cultural and language barriers. There is the fact that a US degree is just better than a third world degree. There are also more subtle issues around motivation. The motivation becomes to drag out work interminably so this person can stay in the country. Changing jobs is not as easy for these people, so they bring a different (and destructive) attitude to their work.

Finally, I would point out that the people asking for more H-1Bs are the ideological allies of the people who say that we need Mexicans to come in and do whatever they do and the ideological heirs to the people who wouldn't let us pick our own cotton. Ask yourself whether those people are or were benevolent.

It gives employers a base of employees who have even less leverage, so it's good for them. But I suspect it pushes wages down across the board in this country, which I can't see being good for the economy long term.
