thats 80K pre-taxed right?

yea that would be extremely hard to do... after taxes and insurance, they probably have about 50K left right?

Are they living in Frenchmen's Bend or one of the ridiculously over priced new neighborhoods the Monroe refugees love to move into? Home prices in Sterlington have gotten ridiculous.

1) what is the cost of the house they are living in? what % of monthly take home pay is their house note?

2) What is the cost/note of the cars they drive? Is he driving a $30k/$40k truck with $600+/mo note?

3) she driving a $30k/$40k SUV with another $600+/mo note?

4) have a boat or RV or Camper with another note?

5) do the eat out 2-3 days a week?

If they are living in a $250 - $300k home, driving two new $30k vehicles and have a recreational purchase with a note, then they are to blame.

you must leave within a budget and within your means. can't have it all and expect to not have an emergency pop up. Buy used vehicles or something smaller. have one vehicle that the whole family can get in and a smaller car and husband and wife can swap vehicles as needs arise on who needs the bigger vehicle.

You are grumbling about high health insurance rates and costs?? And then blaming Trump??

Ummm.. what did the GOP say what was going to happen to costs?? And remember the Dems screaming “raciss” when it was brought up?

Trick is to not have three kids on only $80,000, or hell invest in some birth control. My girl and I are making a little more than that combined and having kids has never crossed our mind.

The question nobody asks is why is the cost of living so high for necessities? Why is a gallon of milk $5? How much is a median house nowadays? Why does a truck cost $40k?

We’ve been conned for years to believe that inflation is a good thing....all so the banks can get their loans paid and put us all in debt. It’s caused distortions for those on the lower income side to where $80k is tight.

The same people that bitch about inflation and the lack of growth in real wages are the same people who vote for inflationary policies like Medicare and Medicaid expansion. Government spending is what is forcing the Fed into dovish monetary policy in the first place.

They also love that their company is covers half of their healthcare insurance premiums that are growing at astronomical rates because of community rating and guaranteed issue. All things that are extremely popular to moderates, liberals and progressives.

Your wage growth is getting eaten alive by benefits as that is what the people demanded.

Until spending is honed interest rates will never be normalized in this country. Which means they will never be normalized. Runaway inflation in housing, healthcare and education will continue for decades.

This does not compute. Great job or not 80k combined income when probably 40K of that is from the teacher is not a lot. I will never understand why people have multiple kids when their take home pay is just a slightly higher then poverty level.

The wife needs to leave the teaching job. That career pays shite and always will. You can't be crying in a drug store and then on the flip side stay in teaching because its some kind of passion. Pick one.

The husband needs to find a better job. He isn't making shite at whatever plant he is working at.

Wages have been on the rise in the last 3 years and the economy is doing the best in a long time. Op alluded to destruction of the dollar and the middle class. I have news for you. 80k combined is not middle class almost anywhere with 3 kids.

80k with 3 kids, need to learn how to budget. I know families that get by with less that don't struggle and aren't on that government teat either.

3 kids on 80k seems doable, but I live in a rural/poor area. One would have to cut out the things we think are musts but really aren’t: college funds, braces, travel ball, pageants, new vehicles, multiple vacations, hunting club dues and so forth; but a family should be able to put meals on the table, clothes on their backs and have a house full of love on 80,000.

Sad think is you almost have to have two incomes to live comfortably. Its almost as if the powers that be want you to have strangers raising your kids.

Plus most health plans now have huge deductibles. That would be a tough pull without a solid emergency fund in the bank.

Median household income in Louisiana is not $60K plus. In 2017 it was $46K plus. And it likely fell in 2018. So this couple is making far more than the median household income in La.

Rich get richer and poor get poorer, but only for the last 38 years. Funny how the poor vote for same candidates as the rich. Must have something in common.

Don't try to make a point and then load your point with pure bull shite. Groceries have not gone up 30 to 50%. Nope.

Yeah, I don’t think grocery prices have gone up more than 5% over the past 2 years. The inflation I see is in real estate and property taxes...maybe automobiles?

I don't want to comment specifically on your sister, but here is what I'd tell you.

There is zero chance I would have had 3 kids if I were only making 80k / year. That's an amazingly irresponsible choice.

It's a problem, if you look at jobs created, almost all are in the top 25% of communities in terms of wealth. Middle of the country is getting left behind. Even more staggering is that 90+% of all jobs created in the past 10 years are part time / gig work without benefits.

We are only just seeing the beginning of automation and machine learning impact the workforce. Deutsche Bank is cutting 18,000 jobs and reports something like 650,000 labor hours already replaced by automation.

So its not just hitting repetitive manual labor, it's also starting to hit repetitive cognitive labor / professional back office jobs. Very scary given how we have really on scratched the surface in terms of ai and automation

If she's a teacher and he works in a plant and they only make 80k, I have some assumptions.

1. She works at a private school and makes 14-15k. If she went to work in public school in Ouachita Parish she'd instantly get a 25k raise.

2. He is low skilled labor if he's only making that much working at any of those plants. He needs to get some new skills or find a way to move up.

3. They live beyond their means. 80k is more than my parents ever made. We were poor when I was a kid, a little less poor when the other siblings came along, but by the time they got us grown they had helped put two through college and one over halfway through.

The secret? FISCAL DISCIPLINE.

I think the opposite is true. Sure there are exorbitantly expensive options, but the economy cars are downright cheap. Even a base model pickup truck is reasonable.

Real estate on the other hand has gotten unreal anywhere with decent work in the area. Sure the money is cheaper, but the prices have risen sharply to offset that.
