I didn’t even consider that she might be teaching at a private school. If that’s the case, she’s making a little more than 20K per year and I’m sure their insurance is shite. Ouachita Parish pays well for teachers and most of their schools are A and B Schools

My wife and I married in 1987
She was 4 months pregnant at the time
We had planned to get married 4 months earlier but her mom made us postpone our wedding for 4 months so that she could plan a big wedding
We went on a trip on our original wedding day and she got pregnant on it

She had a minimum wage job and I made 50% more than minimum wage
We had 3 children in our first 5 years of marriage

It was a struggle

Now 32 years and 7 children total we live an upper middle class life

4 of our 7 children have graduated college and have good careers
1 is in the military and the other 2 haven’t graduated high school yet

It is a mans responsibility to care for his family and all things will work out if you treat it as such

I think the OP should be called out for groceries going up 50 percent. I am a freaking geek at this kind of thing and I am showing a 3 percent increase over the last four years on my grocery bill.

Groceries are cheap as hell compared to bygone decades. The percentage of many families spend feeding themselves has never been lower. People, despite eating out more spend a lot less on food than they did in the 60s (15% of income compared to 10%).

I'm seeing all the responses from those who think it is not responsible to have 3 kids on $80K. If you're married, don't have a fertility problem, and have less than 3 kids, you've bought the big plan for self-extermination and/or are just plain lazy and selfish. These parents were more generous than average to have 3 and should have more. You selfish people who choose to limit are a main reason why this country is failing.

Creating children BEFORE you are an established professional creates systemic poverty.

Having children is good - but at the right time.

Also, some people are not responsible or wired correctly to have kids.

Damn baw. I have had 2 years in my 19 years since I graduated college where I didn't get a raise. Those were during the financial crisis and I worked for a financial company so I was pretty much just glad to still be employed.

I do. Charter school, so no union. My premium is paid for 100%. It cost me $35 in medical bills to have our last kid.

Lol damn. Everyonw needs to wait to have kids until 30 or so? Unless all the stars in the world aligned for them to become "established professionals" before that point?

They don't make 80k and live in Sterlington and send their kids to private school. The people that send their kids to private school want to live in the city but don't want to send their kids to F schools. You can count me in that number.

Sterlington has great public schools, so if they are sending their kids to OCS, River Oaks, or St. Fred’s, they’re wasting a ton of money

Yeah that’s a bit much I would say. Let’s not forget that the “emergency” example in the OP is 200 dollars. About 1/4 of 1% of the families before tax income. Most people spend much more than that in ATM fees during the year or could collect that much loose change in a year.

If you are over 21 and a 200 dollar event causes you to cry, it’s time to grow the frick up and you should reread the fable about the ant and the grasshopper.

Blame the government, healthcare is the most heavily regulated field. How's that worked out?

The problem is we're a giant welfare state, too many do-nothings and gimmedats and too few actual workers.

It depends on where you live, but yeah. A decision to have kids should always factor in your ability to financially support the child. If it doesn't, you are irresponsible.

Funny how sixty years ago, a housewife and three-kid family was the norm. Yet now if you have both parents working they might still be irresponsible for expecting what was normal just a generation ago. Doesn't this speak exactly to OP's point?

I want American kids to be successful.

Also, our lifespans will continue to improve as medicine advances over time. Back in the day, Americans had kids young because you just didn't live that long. That isn't the case anymore once you're middle class.

Ultimately, it really doesn't matter what we do since several high pop developing countries are just adding child after child into absolutely shameful living conditions.

This x100000

People should put pen to paper and really figure out the extent affordability in having multiple offspring.

If you can’t afford them, don’t have them.

Should have stopped with two healthy ones-presuming that is the case.

Why three kids? I would imagine it's because of sex.

Who is the sick frick making them have sex? This sounds outrageous!

My wife and I clear about 120k, only have one kid. Am I suppose to be taxed to death because we chose to have one? Hell, had I known that I'd be punished I would have had more. If I have to pay for children I'd rather it be mine than someone elses.
