I despise tariffs. Believe that in theory they dont work when we play the same game… we don’t and therefore they need to be part of the conversation

If I'm Trump, I'd put a 100% tariff on imported seafood. I don't give a frick if Chinese crawfish are 20 bucks a lb I'm not buying that shite.

Chinese seafood is fricking disgusting

In a true free market...there would be no tariffs...but we don't operate in a truly free market. Tariffs are used in response to other country's unfair practices. The thing I don't like about tariffs is they can start a series of responses from other countries that becomes a chain reaction.

Yet you bitch about high prices and inflation. All tariffs do is increase the price of domestically produced goods. Plus in the case of the Chinese, their currency is so manipulated that they adjust it to compensate. If this were the Japanese, I might agree with you

Tariffs aren't necessarily a bad thing, it depends on where the money goes.
Traditionally two things...
1. The monies goes into government coffers only and thus effectively becomes a "tax".
2. It is used in trade negotiations only, diplomatically speaking.
In the past Trump has done two things that changes that, and his administration did only a so-so job of touting it:
1. The monies, or a large % of them, were 'turned around' back to the producer. For example, $ received from tarriffs on beans (China) were re-directed as subsidies to bean producers. Not only was it not a tax at that point, China was paying to give them a marketplace advantage. It doubled the benefit.
2. He has used them as a diplomatic weapon across the board, not just trade, recognizing that trade is not a stand alone monolith. Advantages such as the tariffs on Mexico if they didn't shut down their side of the border either a) caused them to pay for the cost in the form of those tariffs, OR reduced our cost by them agreeing to the policy. Either way, the US economically gained.

Countries don't pay them not a dime (yuan)
But Trump knows business.....
So it is either, Free trade and no tariffs while US domestic manufacturing and production plummets and decent paying jobs go oversees. Now no one has money to pay for our cheap, imported, goods.
Or, put tariffs and raise the costs on goods, keep most of those decent paying jobs, and maybe stave off companies trying to offshore jobs.

So, I say put a tariff on anything produced outside the US and imported in so that we can promote having factories and jobs in the continental united states.
That’s fine and dandy but you need to understand that food is a major player that is going to get tariffed in your scenario. Just something for you to consider.

The other thing tarrifs are good for is he can use them like sanctions against countries like China who export goods to us to prevent China from attacking neighboring countries like Taiwan..
You want to attack our allies, then we will slap a 20% tarrif tax on all goods you ship to the US to sell in our country..
Plus, he can use tariffs to stop all of our manufacturing jobs from leaving here and being taken by countries like Mexico. Or, at least make it a fairer playing field where some of the jobs stay here and some go to Mexico.

Trump Speech On His Economic Plan mentioned the McKinley Tariff act of 1890.
It was concluded that the tariff hastened the development of domestic tinplate production by about a decade but also that the benefit to the industry was outweighed by the cost to consumers
Barry Cunningham explains it well, after Trump's speech. Go to 2 hour and 6 minute mark to hear a great explanation.

The Tariff Act of 1890, commonly called the McKinley Tariff, was an act of the United States Congress, framed by then Representative William McKinley, that became law on October 1, 1890.[1] The tariff raised the average duty on imports to almost 50%, an increase designed to protect domestic industries and workers from foreign competition, as promised in the Republican platform.[2] It represented protectionism, a policy supported by Republicans and denounced by Democrats.

i caught the tail end this am on cnbc before that clown came on. There were two business guys on explaining the value of tariffs, it was more than just money.
Both seemed to be on the right side and intelligent. Wish that worm kid was working today, guess he was off.

Now post your hard evidence that consumer prices increased due to Chinese tariffs of steel and aluminum.
All they can do is post theories that are only accurate on a completely level playing field. You can manipulate numbers all you want. The democrats do it all the time with inflation. The simple truth is that Trump's tariffs did not affect my pocketbook.

Might be nice to make things in the US. Supply chain improved, money going to American workers, tax revenue increases, workers are insured and the Chicoms have less money.
Cramer can EABOD.
Cramer can EABOD.

Trump's proposal that Cramer is talking about isn't about China. It is about Trump's proposal to put tariffs on all imports which is called "universal baseline tariffs". The idea of universal baseline tariffs originated with Keynes.

He's proposing they only have to be made in America. Ownership of the company has no bearing on it. So if a foreign company wants to build a factory in the US and employ Americans.... no tariff.
He might be playing a longer game here and do to everybody else, including China, what China has done to us: Have us build the factory on their soil, then change the rules of the game and basically take it from them.

Other countries don’t pay tariffs.
