Why doesn't he sell some more of his fabulous artwork? I was told people loved to buy it not for influence with his father but for the beauty of his work itself.

Suppose we just take his statements at face value and believe he is telling the truth.
So what? If he and Joe Tatoe hadn't tried to skirt the rules to their advantage, they would not be in this mess.

In assuming banks etc provided lines of credit based on influence, and underwrote based on his prior “earnings”. They looked the other way.
