I've never understood the hierarchy of allowable animals to kill or eat.
Why should it be any more legal or acceptable to kill a pig or cow than a horse or dog?

The elephant has always amazed me as an animal for its intelligence and ridiculous levels of entropy. The only other animal like it is us when it comes to a reverence for death. That's a false stereotype. Let a pig free, and they actually have higher hygiene than most animals. Pigs are also interesting animals, since outside of the apes, they are our closest genetic cousins.
Christopher Hitchens had a great theory on our fear of the pig in certain cultures though: we once partook in human sacrifices and burnt them alive. Human flesh by all accounts tastes like pork. Then there is the scream which is very similar to our own that people in slaughterhouses get PTSD over. It's their connection to us which makes them taboo.

Agreed. A crow lower than a fricking squirrel? Ridiculous. I don't think you'd find anyone who would say that a falcon and especially an owl is more intelligent than a crow. The only bird on the same level is a parrot. Crows are exceptionally intelligent and have figured out tools. Certainly in the Top 5.

Elephants should be higher. They not only show object permanence, but they understand death. They mourn fallen herd members and will return to visit the "grave" every so often.
