So I can dismantle it when in conversation with your rank and file prog

As far as I can tell, the talking points go something like this:
-Immigration is an economic positive because they (Hispanic) immigrants do the jobs no one else wants to do and do it for under market value
-open borders are a libertarian issue because human beings should be able to move unrestricted across arbitrarily defined landmasses
-Immigration restrictions are what ultimately caused the fall of the Roman Empire (heard this from a lefty I work with, haven’t been able to verify this claim) and people are just going to violate the law anyways, so we should preemptively give up on enforcing national borders

What else?

The easiest is the fact that you can not have unfettered immigration AND a welfare state.

The money eventually runs out.

You forgot racism. Somehow it’s racist not to allow one race to bum rush the border.

Diversity, because its worked so well for the Balkans.

In a vacuum, immigration can be incredibly beneficial to a society.

Our current immigration status is not, however.

Money supply is infinite. That’s because it’s just ink on paper.

Immigration eventually leads us to Utopia. It goes like this:

1. Open the borders and let them vote.
2. Democrats take total control.
3. Democrats transform the US to a communist nation.
4. Voila! Utopia!

Cant keep the Social Security ponzi scheme working with a declining population. That’s why both parties support it.

That’s a fricking tired, bullshite trotted out line. And I have statistics to back it up. The reason they have those jobs is because:

quote:

under market value

quote:

open borders are a libertarian issue because human beings should be able to move unrestricted across arbitrarily defined landmasses

Then let’s just dismantle all nation states. One world government.

quote:

Immigration restrictions are what ultimately caused the fall of the Roman Empire (heard this from a lefty I work with, haven’t been able to verify this claim)

Untrue. There’s a myriad of things that caused Rome to fall. But one of the most egregious errors they made is allowing non-Romans to become citizens. They held foreign beliefs, customs, and moors. That and their Roman citizens decided that living in decadence was better than their stoic past.

The fall of the Roman Empire is really not far from what we’re seeing right now.

Immigration is still a huge issue. It wouldn’t be if we forced assimilation on people that come into this nation, but that is mean in the eyes of our liberal friends.

Immigrants take jobs that would have otherwise gone to Americans.

Immigrants place downward pressure on wages. Corporations love it. Workers should hate it.

Corporations don’t have to invest in educating Americans when they can acquire cheaper educated immigrants.

Illegal immigrants bring in disease.

Most first generation immigrants vote for the same ideology they run from. Except Cuban immigrants. They know what’s up.

Its sold as being compassionate towards the less fortunate. But when the bill comes due the cost is elections and ultimately country and Americanism.

Lack of intellectual capital. Basically, some citizens are too lazy to work, as recently, people on unemployment make more than people working, and 2., alit of our citizens are to stupid, they can't read or write. Therefore, let the immigrants in.

I just want to know why the term immigration automatically refers to Hispanics, especially in the media. They’re so myopic.

The only immigration should be based on a strict merit system that is designed to be an asset to our citizens and our country.

The left only want's bottom dwellers who will be never-do-wells.

It keeps wages down and prevents companies from hiring Americans. Case in point: When some of the chicken plants in Mississippi were busted last year for having illegals, they were replaced them with unemployed Americans. Americans HAVE to come first.

Also, no country can survive with open borders, and no country can survive with the immigration policy we’ve had.

It’s impossible to argue immigration with a leftist and expect to make any headway. They will regurgitate the standard talking points like the ones in this thread (although the one that they are a net positive in the economy because they pay a bazillion dollars in taxes other than income taxes hasn’t been mentioned). Once you counter each one, they will eventually point out that your ancestors came her through immigration so you’re a hypocrite. They will be quite smug and consider you defeated.

Go do something outside instead like take a walk or fish.

Immigrants don't put enough into SS to make a difference.

False arguement.

This.

I loved the Thatcher quote about socialism. She said socialism is great until you run out of other people's money to spend.

Unregulated, unrestricted immigration isn’t sound policy. People have been arguing over immigration for over 200 years. The US offers each country a number of visas each year and they are often distributed by means of an internal lottery. The lottery winners sometimes sell their citizenship. I know about 500 or more people who have immigrated here and almost each individual has a different legal status. The various kinds of visas and citizenship statuses are head spinning. I know about 3-5 people who have been deported and each of their situations were different.
Some industries are completely dependent upon imported labor and some only seasonally. The number of J-1 Visas granted for summer workers has historically been very high. The demographic of people accepting J-1’s has evolved over the past 25-30 years has changed because of economic conditions internationally. I know a bunch of people who found ways to stay permanently after initially being here on a J-1. Fake marriages are the most common and they’re big money. The going rate for girl/guy to enter into that deal is about $25k.
