Former Gov. Blanco: 'No escape' from her cancer

We are about to lose one of our leaders. Say what you will about her politics (I oppose them); she is a decent person, and cancer sucks. It's sad to see it end like this, but nature has a way of dealing bad hands to people. Our State will soon be mourning. God be with you, Gov Blanco.

quote:

She said her husband Raymond, known by friends as "Coach," has been her biggest cheerleader through 54 years of marriage.

"We've had a lot of fun together," she said

This part is particularly striking as both a husband and a father. I dread the day that either my wife or myself must leave each other and our family behind.

Sad to hear. She seemed like a nice lady who was in over her head.

The Blanco’s are good people. I don’t agree with their politics but I know them personally (one of the girls was the maid of honor at my wedding).

I am always impressed by how tight they were as a family. They also were some of the most humble, warm, and gracious folks I know. I always wished Ms. Kathleen wasn’t a democrat.

She is a great person.

Glad to see the "all liberals are filth" crowd hasn't shown up.

I agree with your assessment of Gov Blanco. She seems like a good person and her governorship was simply overwhelmed by Katrina for which she was not well prepared (few were).

I’d just like to say that you sound a little over dramatic about death in general. She must be in her mid-70’s. She had a decent run and a good life. She might be cashing in a little sooner than some, but hey, we’re all mortal. Death is a part of the deal.

I pray that she is spared much suffering and for the consolation of her family upon her departure.

Sad to hear but we are all dying from the day we are born. It's just a crapshoot as to what takes you out of this physical world.

I got to meet her in 2004. Shortly after her term started. Very nice person.

Yes, she was way over her head with Katrina/Rita, but outside of Gen Honore, was their a single leader at any level of government that really performed well during those days?

From late 2001 through Katrina... the entire "natural disaster management" protocol took a back seat to terrorism preparedness. FEMA went from a cabinet level entity to a tiny part of Homeland Security.

There's a reason why disaster prep is such a big deal now.

Whatever her mistakes were... I truly believe she had the best interest of her state at the top of her mind, at all times.

Fair winds and following seas, governor.

This has been going on for a while. I wasn't a fan, but it's sad to hear.

This.

Sad to hear. Cancer rarely happens to the people that truly deserve it.
