You’re trying to make this a digital issue and the reality is that it’s analog.

Could governments regulate the means in which porn is distributed and still maintain compliance with the 1A?

For example ban all forms of porn distribution except for paper and Betamax (kidding about this but you get the point)?

The belief that the “development of humanity” is bending towards some sort of “progress” is a religious/non-scientific belief.

I never used the word "progress" specifically.

That's why it's a constant thing. We analyze society, new behaviors/thoughts emerge, they get tested, and often get rejected and we return back to baseline. Sometimes we don't, and things like slavery get outlawed and the concepts of personal liberty and property rights are established.

They can if 5 people say they can. If 5 people say they can’t then they can’t.

I didn’t (and won’t) read the bill. Maybe I’d be in favor of it, maybe I wouldn’t. I was responding to the predictable and depressing cries of “you can’t legislate morality” from the window licking crowd.

Respectfully, that is some head in the sand thinking but that's your convictions I guess. There are better ways to get sexual pleasure than watching something that makes pedophiles, rapists and abusers rich. Sort of a boner killer when you think of it that way.

This is dumb, would require serious encroachments on civil liberties and privacy to even attempt to enforce, and would also be impossible to enforce.

I don't know... I haven't been able to get on pronhub for like over a year in NC...

Calling it “development”, which typically has a positive meaning in this context, is. You could have used the word “change”; you didn’t.

But you’re just doing the same thing with your idea. So you shot yourself with your own gun, authoritarian.

I am not defending porn but just pointing out you can not legitimately legislate morality anymore than you can legislate what people think

You most definitely are defending porn AND legislating morality in favor of porn. There never has been and never will be any law or regulation that has no basis in morality. It's just what moral viewpoint the law or regulation comes from. Pornography comes from a very dark moral perspective.

I do. Do we allow kids to buy alcohol and “let the parents do their job?” Is our system of age verification for alcohol and tobacco purchases over-burdensome on “freedom?”

At what point does government mandated safety rules and regulations for a potentially personally damaging product cross over into a 1A violation for you?

I'm all for this. Porn is definitely being consumed by kids and adolescents, and I think it's terrible.

I really don't know what your argument here is unless it's just how much of the authoritarian label you can attach -

quote:

With respect to power? Everything.

quote:

When we're dealing with government, that's pretty much the discussion.

The above seemingly endorses my entire premise, which is that authoritarianism vs. liberalism is the entirety of the discussion for you. Am I distorting your viewpoint here?

Because my response would be that it need not be, nor has it been (either in American history or conservatism).

With all the shite we have going on could you imagine spending time on banning porn?

We are 36T in debt. You can ban porn when that number hits 0.

I theorize that porn usage is contributing dramatically to the decrease in birth rates.

I'm curious as to how this debate changes with scope.

If you lived in a town of 50 people, are you more willing to let the town decide it doesn't want to allow pornography in the town? 500 people? 1000?

Is there a point at which your argument of letting parents rather than government decide that issue for your kids fades because there is a certain level of collectivism you're less afraid of because you have more voice in it and/or can more easily opt in or out of it (ie, move to a new town, decide to avail yourself of a more/less restrictive community?)

If we don’t raise our birth rate, our debt becomes an insolvable issue. Thanks for stopping by. Grab some parting gifts on your way out.
