quote:

RICHMOND, TX - County Judge KP George is offering Disney "billions of dollars" in investments if the entertainment giant builds a new Disney World in Fort Bend.

George wrote to Disney Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Bob Chapek, asking him to visit and consider building "a new Walt Disney World resort" in Fort Bend County. However, George did not specify where the billions of dollars in investment would come from, should Disney take him up on the offer.

George's letter comes after Florida lawmakers voted to strip Disney of a special self-governing status that allows the company to have near-total control over Disney World and Epcot's property. In a deal that most corporations could only dream of having, Disney has powers to levy taxes and build roads. It also controls the police force, fire department, and all utilities on the land used by its theme parks.

quote:

In his letter to Chapek, George called Florida extremist, authoritarian and anti-business."

"We in Fort Bend are more than ready to welcome the Disney family with thousands of good-paying jobs and billions of dollars in investments," George wrote. He also told Chapek that Fort Bend County is "a welcoming and diverse place to do business."

The letter is in the FB link. Also, an ABC13 article for those who don't want to click on Facebook, I just liked the bits from the Covering Fort Bend page better.

Interesting to note that while KP George evidently supports Disney's "right" to self-governance, he thinks a bill allowing parents/guardians to be the sole "teacher" on sexual orientation issues until a kid is in the 4th grade is "extreme". Also, he was one of the biggest mask Nazis in the entire state of Texas during the COVID season.

He also doesn't seem to know where the "billions" would come from to entice Disney, and to be quite honest, Ft. Bend County has so much economic development and continued growth happening, it doesn't need whatever positive tax revenues would be generated from it being relocated to the county. In fact, it would probably crowd Ft. Bend too damn much anyway.

Hoping the voters send Judge George packing this election season.

Just curious. Maybe legal experts can help.

But what authority does a county judge to offer any of that? I would guess that the county and state government would have to approve something like this.

Disney is already planning a move to the Satsuma exit. Heard it from my gardener who has a cousin that is a realtor.

In Texas, your County Judges like George and Hildalgo in Harris County aren’t courtroom judges. It’s just the term the counties use, but think about them in the manner of Lafourche or St Martin Parish Presidents. They are the executive branch of the county.

Keep those rats out of Texas, don’t need them, and don’t want them.

County Judges in TX are akin to Parrish Presidents in LA.

I.e. Harris County (Houston) judge is 27 yo a woman who was a Hospital interpreter (when she was elected.) 0 law or legal experience.

Thank God Louisiana political corruption kept Disney out of St. Tammany or the traffic would have been 20 time worse.

Gotcha, thanks for clarifying, that makes much more sense. Although I'd like to see the financial plan for where the $$$ is coming from...is the tax base big enough to eat that?

It’s all just virtue signaling. They just want it to be known that they support the thing.

I guess this idiot think it’s no problem for Disney to pack up 4 theme parks, 30 resorts, and 77,000 employees like it’s some type of caravan

I can understand the desire to have a Disney World economic impact in your community, but I don’t think it’s worth losing your own soul over it, and that’s what you’re risking at this point in time. You’re saying that your money is more important than your own soul. It isn’t. It’s just paper, and paper that buys stuff that corrupts, and paper that almost every day decreases in value. It’s not worth it, but I know that won’t stop people from doing whatever it takes to attain and retain it. That’s a sad existence, and one that will prove to be a horrific exchange.
