If he's an investigative reporter I assume he made some phone calls and asked the administration and/or the family.
It wouldn't be that hard.
I'm not saying he couldn't be lying, but there's no reason to automatically assume that he is.
If that allegation gains any traction you'll know whether he's lying or not because Trump will either claim otherwise or he won't say anything.

Look, I’m voting for Trump, but things like this do open a window into the man and his personal and family relationships.
When my youngest graduated HS, my father who was working on the west coast, got off work, went to the airport and took a red eye to Atlanta. There he rented a car and drove to the graduation. When it was over, he took us to eat, got back in the rental, drove to the airport and flew back to Washington.
There’s much that can be said about loyalty.
