ALABASTER, Ala. (WBRC) - The City of Alabaster Water Department will stop adding fluoride to the public drinking water system effective Monday, June 8, 2026.
The Alabaster Water Board said the decision was made after “careful evaluation of operational considerations, including employee safety, equipment maintenance requirements, chemical handling procedures and long-term infrastructure needs associated with the fluoridation system.”
According to a social media post from the board, the discontinuation of fluoridation will not impact the water treatment or disinfection processes. They said water quality will continue to be their highest priority.
If you wish to continue receiving fluoride for dental health, you’re encouraged by the board to reach out to your dentist for options, including toothpaste, mouth rinses, supplements, or professional treatments.

Awww, back to the 60s.
I remember when fluoride was added to drinking water where I lived. Kids tooth decay went down substanially, especially mine. Good to see places go backwards. Probably initiated by dentists.

Fluoride only works on the surface of your teeth; it does not get there through your gut.

Did you know that your toothpaste has fluoride in it?

I guess you are clueless to much more fluoride is available now as compared to 60 years ago. Not only in dental products but is pretty much all packaged foods that use fluoridated public water as part of the processing. Also do you drink tea? Because tea is a significant source of dietary fluoride.

No, away from the 60s. We dont need that shite in the water supply anymore

This isn't being done as some type of "healthy choice" by the city.
It's because they don't feel like doing it as it takes time, effort, and money.
How much you wanna bet the water bills will stay the same?
As far as the health benefits and possible risks, there is wide debate on both sides but to say fluoridated water does not reduce tooth decay is not true.
We gonna remove the iodine from table salt too?

Flouride is standard in toothpaste now. So you get the benefit without ingesting it.

You still need at least some free chlorine for disinfection....

The efficacy might be debatable. However, forcibly medicating everyone without their consent is the issue. As stated previously, if you want to put fluoride in your mouth, virtually every tooth care product has it in there.
On a side note, I switched to NOBS dental tablets three 5 yrs ago. It’s a Xylitol based product, no fluoride for me. Zero issues since I’ve switched.

They were selling you fluoride treatment while you were already getting fluoride.

You have a choice not to ingest the water from the municipal water system if you feel that strongly.
Your supposed "right" to choose non-fluoridated water doesn't negate the obvious health benefits for the broader population.
This is akin to the anti-vaxxers wanting to bring back measles, mumps, or rhubella over their "freedom of choice'.

My anecdotal.
I was raised on well water. Outside of family gatherings and parties, soda wasn't available in my parents house. It wasn't in the budget. Milk or water were the only offerings. The same with snacks, only if visitors were coming over.My mother cooked basic meals. Totinos were the extent of processed food in the house. We ate out once per week after church.
I was riddled with cavities. I grew up with fluoride in toothpaste. We had fluoride treatments in elementary school. It still seemed like every dentist visit turned up another one. It wasn't until I left for college in 1987 did it end.
I've been drinking city water since then and have only had one additional cavity in the last 40 years.
My grown kids are bottle water drinkers since leaving the nest and guess what, cavities.
