SS is an untouchable 3rd rail until the Boomers die off. When that happens, they'll almost certainly cut benefits because of the pathetic birth rates.

The arguments will be the same. "How can you cut my benefits after you've stolen my money for 50 years." The only solution is the gradually increasing option to reduce your pay withheld in return for less benefits, leaving it up to you to use your extra money to plan your retirement investments. As time goes the gradual option will become 100% and SS will be gone. But that's gonna take a long time without the left promising everyone more money and scrapping the reform.

Not a bad idea and better than means testing, in my opinion.

I think The GOPe resisted both efforts: Bush's reforms plus Ryan's push to cut benefits.
The GOPe even resisted Bush's medicare advantage plans, with one senator giving his support in exchange for not enacting it in his state until he retired.
Barack Obama nad both houses for two years and changed healthcare forever plus contaminated the entire beurocracy. The GOP held it for four years under Bush and now four years under Trump and can't get sh!te done.

The dems can't put punishing corporate tax rates in effect if the return to SS depends partially on performance of equities. Therefore it would be lockstep vote against that and continuous fear mongering propaganda that will scare the smooth brains. Even though they are shoveling their own money into 401K funds.

I went to a function in Little Rock where he was promoting it. Only time I ever went to a political event, but my friend got me in. Pretty cool to see POTUS in person.

It will never be fixed. We were doomed as soon as it was allowed to be spent as part of the general fund.
If that wasn't bad enough we were then saddled (thru much arm twisting) Obamacare, which is going to be pushed to further to create universal Medicare for everyone. The DSA is going to begin this push in the DNC.
We are basically in socialism now, just not quite full blown.

I recall at the time the TARP fiasco was being played out thinking - it appears our black community friends are afflicted with a permenant case of "paying on mortgage loans is raciss" syndrone.
And I watched in frustration in the wanning moments of the Bush II term as the UniParty fell all over themselves in an attempt to fix the problem our pal Bill Clinton created. IMO that's why we've seen this lovefest between the Bush clan and Bill and Hildabeest played out ever since that TARP debacle.
Don't get me started on Obama and his Affordable Heathcare Act. There is nothing affordable about that fiasco. It was legislation funded by a massive dip into Medicare (hint: I recall at the time the mafia democrats told us the estimated startup cost for obamacare was $ 494 billion - a downpayment maybe). And our seniors have suffered for it.

This was the reality. The corporate media still had significant influence in the early 2000’s and scared old people. Members of his own party started to waffle and that was it. I have a lot of issues with W Bush, but this was not really on him.
