His approval rating is going to completely tank leading to a midterm bloodbath if this war escalates and they cannot figure out how to address the cost of oil.

He also signed the Doha Agreement, handing control of Afghanistan over to the Taliban, in an attempt to end the cycle of nation building and never-ending wars in the Middle East as a cornerstone of his foreign policy agenda that he ran on in 2020.

I don’t think Trump wants to do “Nation Building” in Iran like we saw in Iraq and Afghanistan. He wants the Iranian people to overthrow their government and put a more palatable one in place. Whether or not that works remains to be seen.

And so it goes

How do you square your comment of Israel goading him into this with his stance on military intervention in Iran for the past 46 years and him literally campaigning on bombing the "shite" out of middle eastern terrorists? You're pivoting here.

The rare reasonable and rational viewpoint. Kudos.

I'd go much further than that, but yeah, different discussion.

I’m gonna do it anyway because frick it.

I’d reduce the size of the Marines by at least half. Leave maybe a regiment on each coast to deploy on MEUs. Then I’d have a squad of seasoned and highly trained(like Force Recon level) Marines on each Navy destroyer to conduct ship boarding, embassy reinforcement, other SOF type stuff that can be accomplished without massive support from the Air Force or 160th type assets that need to be moved across the globe. And keep the embassy guard role of course. And if I really had my way I’d transfer aviation and most other non-combat roles over to the navy. Leave the bulk of the heavy lifting ground combat to the Army IMO.

I’m pretty sure Marines would be deployed first in the event of a large scale ground invasion

I guess ‘privately said’ is supposed to sound more legit that ‘sources say’?…

Trump will never put boots on the ground.

This is stupid.

GWOT really fricked up a lot of people's idea of how these units are normally used.

Well, has the battlespace not changed a lot?

It has never worked---the next person is typically worse than the previous because they are now even more mad at the foreign government that killed their ppl.

The battlespace changes but the reason doctrine exists is specifically to define capabilities that work across different battlespaces. It’s built around capabilities that remain useful as wars change.

The 82nd is the Army’s rapid-deployment airborne division built for forcible entry at scale and contingency response.

Rangers are elite light infantry built for raids and airfield seizures.

Special operations forces, taken together, are specialized units built for missions like counterterrorism, unconventional warfare, special reconnaissance, and working with partner forces in places conventional units aren’t designed to operate, and they are not designed or intended to perform the same large-scale missions as formations like the 82nd or the Ranger Regiment.

They didn’t exist to support SOF before GWOT and they don’t now. GWOT just warped people’s perception because SOF operations dominated the wars and Rangers often operated alongside them.
