Black History/White Lies: 5 ways Black people built America
“We built this country.”
– Black people
If you survived the American education system’s social studies curriculum, you might believe that Black people have slowly but generously achieved full citizenship into a country that white people created with their own hearts, hands and imaginations. Even the suggestion that America does not belong to white people will elicit consternation or a chuckle. When confronted with the idea that their beloved nation couldn’t exist without Black people, Erasure-Americans might tacitly acknowledge the small part that slavery played in America’s origin story, but that’s it.
That is not it.
To close out Black History Month, we decided to dispel some of the mythology around white history by explaining exactly how Black people built this country.
------------------------------------------------
Black people created the American education system as we know it. It did not exist before we imagined it. We didn’t just fight to educate Black Americans, we provided educational opportunities for all Americans. But, to be fair, white people also contributed segregation, unequal funding and a school-to-prison pipeline.
If only they valued education.

ok, i got it,
so schools and book learning never existed before the black people invented it.
the same black people, who couldnt read, do simple math, or write, got together one day and invented schools

Okay. I guess Harvard, Yale, William & Mary, UVA and UGA were all founded by black people.
We are at full retard alert.

Since they’re an integral part of the backbone, and woven into the fabric of our country, does this mean they’re willing to share some of the responsibility for our problems?

Black people didnt build my house, or the roads leading to my house. So i really dont care what those entitled racists think they did, but it wasn't jack shite.
Nothing from the antebellum south is even in use. Farms were confiscated, and families were bankrupted, free people of color lost their slaves too.

Whenever someone says this, just ask them who invented the light bulb. They’ll either stfu, say Edison stole it from another white guy, or be forced to somehow make the argument that Edison patrolled all plantations and found a scientist among the slaves who couldn’t read or write. Then they’ll stfu.
They didn’t build America anymore than a delivery guy making minimum wage built Papa John’s. They tore them both down, though.

Actually, it was the Germans. They invented K-12 public schools.

Black folks should be on their knees thanking God every day that their ancestors were brought to the USA.
This country would basically be a more capitalist and free Europe without black folks here. Imagine being able to walk around any US inner city at any time and feeling safe.
While slavery as the US practiced it was a sin, the situation we have today is the punishment for that sin.

I'm curious why Haiti, Dominicon Republic, and All of Africa aren't the standard of education excellence.

America ranked #1 in Education in the world at the time Jimmy Carter created the DoE.
We now rank #17 in the world

Black History/White Lies: 5 ways Black people built America
Instead of ripping down well familiar factual history, it would be helpful to build Black history into it. The same holds true of public art. Instead of turning Lee Circle into Podium Place, leave Lee, and build attractive memorials at every slave trading location in New Orleans with a plaques detailing the site and significance. New Orleans does a very poor job of that type thing.
E.g., There is a wonderful Louis Armstrong museum commemorating one of New Orleans' all-time greats .... but it's in NYC!
Fix that!
MLK said "we will overcome." Provide educational exhibits, artworks, and museums showing how Black predecessors actually did just that.
Critical Theory fiction is not the ticket. It's intellectual snake oil.

Black people also sold you into slavery....

This is nothing but black fragility. Black people were basically absent from the Industrial Revolution when this country made great strides in technology and innovation to create things. All those skyscrapers in places like NYC etc were built by Irish, German, French, English, Russian, etc immigrants. Technology was on the way to making slavery irrelevant leading up to the civil war.
